Recently visited with family that included teenage girls, after five days of traditional Japanese tourist sites didn't know how this would go with everyone however they all enjoyed it. Very different and interesting we would have liked to do some hands on ourselves however it was very popular and full. To spend the a little bit of time doing something... More

The staff of the Sakuda Gold and Silver Leaf Shop are welcoming and friendly. They offer a brief yet detailed tour of gold leaf making. If you're interested, you could participate in a gold leaf decorating workshop. First, you choose an item you would like to decorate (e.g. Chopsticks, jewellery boxes, keychains etc.), then, you have to place your design... More

Sakuda has two shops. Go to the main one, 200 m from the smaller corner shop. We got a free tour, tea and presentations. The display of their artworks is fascinating. Prices are reasonable given the quality. Thank you to all the polite, friendly and helpful Sakuda people. Don't miss the upper floor in the main shop!

Definitely have a go at the gold leaf workshop while you're in Kanazawa; it gives you a totally unique gift and a great experience. The instructor doesn't speak much English (just "nice"), but an accompanying staff member does, and she explained anything tricky at the key moments. Most of the time hand signals, or demonstration, was all you needed! You... More

Without a reservation, we were lucky enough to be able to walk in and have a private session with the sensai--he taught us how to apply gold leaf to our chopsticks and we left with custom chopsticks of our own design. He was patient and the chopsticks turned out well. The attached store has many gold leaf options and was... More

We went to the main shop near the East Chaya Street. It is the 2nd gold foil workshop I have been to. We tried out making the chopsticks & the lacquer box. We had a bit more flexibility in terms of design & sticking the foil over. My daughter said it was good. I would strongly suggest that you would... More

If you happen to be in Higashichaya district, do drop by this shop for a quick stop. They have a display with all the different items that have been gilded in gold leaf, tools of the trade and exhibits that explain how the process is done. We saw a demonstration and it looked like very delicate work. You certainly wouldn't... More

The shop is wonderful to tour, gold on everything. The area for the class that applies gold leaf is 100 meters down from the small store within the district. Choose a simple design on a plate if you are really unsure what to make. Chopsticks are less expensive but I think they are harder to make. Have fun with it!... More

We went to Sakuda's to make some gold leaf chopsticks. Our group enjoyed making our own original chopsticks. The owner did not speak much English, but we under stood him easily. We had 26 in our group and it took just over an hour to complete all our chopsticks. For 600 yen it was a nice afternoon spent out of... More

Within walking distance from Yougetsu, the ryokan I was staying at. They didn't answer my email, so I would recommend getting your hotel staff or a Japanese friend to call and reserve on your behalf. I tried out pasting gold leaf on a small plate (角皿 12×12×1.5cm ¥900). The instructor speaks Japanese, so just watch how everyone else does it.... More
