The so called " frog street " became the name from the ancient times as no horse carriages were allowed. Therefore one was able to shop and return home safely (in Japanese KAERU ) Kaeru = frog. So merchants erected a large frog state at the entrance to protect the people, watch over them and keep safe. So it is... More

Visited her also known in part as Frog and Toad Street. There are some craft shops, antique shops, and curio shops. It is a delightful street and well worth looking in the shops, you would be surprised at some of the items in them. Well worth a visit if in Matsumoto.

We were disappointed when visiting mid week, as many of the shops were closed. We weren't sure if this was normal for a Wednesday, or perhaps the time of year ? It was a pleasant walk, but nothing spectacular.

On the way to the castle, a typical tourist street with shops selling knick knacks, food (mostly octopus balls and fish shaped snacks). Frogs seem to be an emblem here

A cute little street with some light shopping possibilities. I guess it used to be more of a mixed store thing in earlier days, but now it is more small cafees and some specialty sourvinir shops. There was one shop which had some promise with a wide range of different things like statues, fans, and the odd gozilla. The street... More

Worth a walk up and down but a bit touristy and rather expensive at that. Despite that some of the buildings are interesting.

We visited here on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed. Lot of places for a quick snack and plenty of other shops with all sorts of items. Easy to fins and fun time visit.

heard it's famous so we pay a visit, and it's actually a short quiet street with interesting local shops selling handicrafts & snacks. Quite street but we love it, not crowded at all. There's some cafes but we only bought snacks from the local shops.

It was a small street with short distance, selling food and souvenirs. There was a shrine when you walk almost to the end. Interesting street for a short walk. It's hard to miss this street while you are walking from the train station to Matsumoto Castle.
