Nature Hike
Jun 2021
A wonderful hike on a very well maintained trail. Very hard to get lost with all the trail signs and amazingly beautiful. Once you reach the rim the hike becomes a little easier. You will not run out views to take pictures of. Besides the active volcano you also have great views of the Pacific Ocean. If you hike all the way to the Ropeway you have a totally different view of Lake Toya and a nice little coffee shop.

A place not to miss when in Northern Japan -
May 2019
Coming by local Bus from the Lake Toya we went up the volcano by the Mount Usu Ropeway. Walking to the Usu Crater Basin Observation Deck we had to walk about 250 meters. Was worth the effort!

Worthwhile

We took the local bus from Lake Toya to the ropeway in winter. It's cold on the mountain. Great views though. We didn't spend much time in the village at the foot of the ropeway though.

Weather impaired our trip
Dec 2019 • Family
When we went here, it was snowing, windy, extremely cold, and slippery. Because of that, we couldn't really enjoy it. However, we can tell that it would provide a beautiful site on a clear day.

Very steep steps up to the lookout
May 2019 • Couples
We visited Mt Usu via the Usuzan Ropeway. To get up to the Usu Crater Basin Observation Deck you need to walk up (about 300m) of very steep steps – actually 136 steps in total. Once at the top, you can then go on various trails.

Even from the Observation Deck you can actually see the volcanic steam/smoke oozing out of the central crater. Mt Usu erupted 4 times in the 20th century – the last being in 2000 - so it really is a sleeping volcano.

Amazingly beautiful!!
Jul 2018 • Family
Even though it was rainy, cloudy, and grey, the view was just amazing. We were worried it would be too expensive to pay 2000 yen to go on the ropeway if it was only a couple minutes, but it was totally worth it. Even without hiking, the view right when you get off the ropeway is spectacular. But if you do go on the hike, you won't regret it. it's definitely a LOT of steps and can get a little steep in some places, so if you have bad knees it might not be a good idea. I'm probably one of the least athletic people I know and I could still do it, just make sure to bring a bottle of water with you. When you first see the long hiking trail, it doesn't really seem like it will be right on the rim of the crater-more like it will go around the rim of the crater and you won't be able to see it. This is just because you don't realize how truly huge the crater is, and be assured that a good portion of the hike literally is the RIM of the crater-it's just a couple feet across and each side leads down. The entire hike yields awesome views, but the viewpoint at the end is just breathtaking and you can see all around. I could see one or two towns, several beaches, the lake, and miles out into the ocean. I think it's one of the best views I've ever seen. Also, there is a bathroom near the end of the hike (but you need to bring your own toilet paper.)

Stunning

Really loved this place despite the cloudy weather that restricted what I imagine would be great views. The cable car ride is stunning and takes you to a good place to explore the crater. Any relatively fit person should be able to manage the walk.

Steep Steps
Aug 2018 • Couples
if you want to get the best view, you will need to get to the viewing platform which is very far from the start point. to make things worse, very steep stairs to and fro. not for kids.

Hike up one of Japan's most active volcanos with 360 degree views on the summit
Oct 2017 • Couples
Mt Usu, a major tourist attraction in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, is located directly south of Lake Toya. The Usuzan Ropeway is the easiest way to reach the summit but there are several long hiking trails to the summit and a trail around the main crater (Search the Internet for Usuzan hiking trails to find more information on alternate approaches). At the base of the ropeway is a small museum where you can watch a short documentary on the volcano and learn of its four eruptions since 1900 – 1910, 1944-45, 1977, and 2000. The documentary includes vivid scenes of the March 1, 2000 eruption filmed from the town just below. Given the ferocity and frequency of the eruptions, I was surprised we could go right to the main summit. There are over 60 craters on Usu. In the town below there is a volcano museum, and the hiking path leading to the summit from the museum takes you through a former part of the town that was inundated by ash and mudflows. It is not often that you can walk through a Japanese ghost town so close to currently inhabited areas. Visited 10/16/2017

Great visit and nice place to walk
Jul 2018 • Family
We are heading to Lake Toya from Noboribetsu, therefore, I planned to visit Mount Usu as a stop while driving to our destination. The place is easy to access via navigating by the car GPS.

The place is awesome when I reach as the place is one of the country national parks and the entire place is well maintained except the shops there is limited I think is maybe the business is hard to sustain.

I missed a lot of nice views as the day I visit have a little rain and very cloudy in the top of the mountain.

Overall I think is a must go if you are a nature lover and want to relax yourselves by hiking and sightseeing.
