Reflective of the Ainu (indigenous people of Hokkaido). The venue was small but well worth it. The staff was super friendly.

This is not a huge museum, but it does provide a good introduction to the lifestyle and history of the local indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Ainu. We stumbled this place while wandering around the area and were happy we found it.

This museum provided us with a terrific insight into the culture and history of Hokkaido's Aboriginal people - the Ainu. It's such a story typical to many countries- where an ancient race of people have been displaced or invaded by an outside culture. The Ainu...More

This small museum brought us to Hakodate. I first visited it alone a few years after seeing the 1999 Ainu exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. An anthropology buff, I found myself blown away by the Smithsonian's introduction to the...More

A very quiet museum with lots of great Ainu artifacts. The museum has a good overview of Ainu and Northern cultures, but at times felt a bit patronising in its interpretation. As a previous reviewer noted, the lack of Ainu voices is a bit glaring...More
