To get there was very easy as you can catch the bus at Otaru station or a taxi very easily.

But the way back you will have to plan well for the bus back as per timetable... waiting at the bus stop was freezing 🥶

Shows were all nice and not too much forcing the animals ... they were lovely and naturally presented the show 🥰

They need to shut this place down - it is so sad to see the animals, especially the dolphins swimming in cricles, so stressed out. I would not visit this place again.

Given Otaru is a very small city in Hokkaido, it's unrealistic to expect a very cool aquarium. Frankly, having its own aquarium is already amazing.

The closest encounter one can get:-
- winter in snow, penguins walking next to you.
- dolphin show with dolphin only 3m away.
- touching the octopus and "sucks" by it.

Great fun day for kids and parents.

This place definitely isn’t what we expected.
On entry there is 3 large turtles in a tiny pool. One of them didn’t move the whole time and another kept banging up against the wall. The dolphins were kept in what looked like a standard pool. They kept swimming fast in circles. Clearly the animals are distressed. If you didn’t think it could get any worse, the other large fish are kept in over crowded dirty tanks, the penguins kept in a small enclosure outside (where they are only allowed out for 5 minute walks 3 times a day) and the sea lions are kept in a tank smaller than an average backyard pool.
After seeing this, then the area opened to play with the animals. The octopus was the most disturbing with one of the staff telling someone “don’t try to touch because it is angry”. People were not being supervised while holding other animals. A man looked like he was gonna squeeze one to death.

Safe to say this place is not clean or well kept at all. So you can only imagine what happens to the animals when they close.
If you care about animal welfare DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME or money.

I hope we could spend more time here, but it closed one hour earlier in winter. We were able to see seal feeding, penguin waling, and dolphin show. They were awesome! You got to see these amazing animals very closely. Plan at least 3 hours here and you won't regret.

Otaru Aquarium is small and bit outdated but has interesting attractions like pinguin parade, unique local fish, kids can touch octopus, walrus show and much more. Make sure to check the show timetable before you come!

Notes:
- During rainy day the walk to aquarium can be challenging because you need to climb lot of steps from the bus station to the aquarium
- People with disability will have a problem to walk thru mainy stairs. Please check with staff for better solution.
- Its pretty convenient to use public bus from the otaru main station to the aquarium
- If you come earlier and have a good weather you can explore surrounding area near the aquarium. There’s a replica of old fisherman village. The surrounding view is very nice!

no ferry service during winter season else it will be more enlightening. we took a bus from the Otaru Station. About 30min bus ride. the place was very small and kinda run down. if not for the show, u can cover the place in an hour. there is a restaurant there but it closes early. We stayed for the seal and dolphin show and penguin walk show. Entrance tix price was relatively ecnomoical priced hence can visit.

Variety of sea creature that you can be close and touch. good for kids to learn about this animal like sea urchin etc.. love the penguin walk parade. so close up with the penguin although it tend to be very crowded with visitor and you dont have enough space to stand and take photo. There are also few animal show like dolphin and seals. If you driving, the parking is provided and but quiet a distance to walk with steps.

Variety of sea creatures and activities. Good for family and kids. Not many choices of food in the park but hot ramen helps when it's rained and cold.
