So signature and the Icon of Sapporo the Otaru Canal is a popular tourist destination for both locals & foreign visitors who flock to the canal year round to enjoy its nostalgic atmosphere. The canal was made obsolete (in function) after the turn of the century but thanks to a citizens movement, the canal was instead beautifully restored and the remaining warehouses turned into museums, shops and restaurants. One eg is the Former Takahashi Warehouse which has been renovated into the Stained Glass Museum, with its many stained glasses on display.
The Canal gradually became the ideal place to enjoy a pleasant stroll during the day, at times the warehouses reflect off the water's surface and old fashioned gas lamps light the path at night creating a romantic atmosphere. The cobblestone walkway, retro setting of gas lamps, stone warehouses all forms part of the charm for the canal.
But we were here on a Saturday noon-time! With much glare and a 15 deg autumn chill we only have a good 30 mins to enjoy the area before we moved off for our lunch at nearby Nord Hotel ( Sizzle Restaurant )
Thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing walk down the canal with the photogenic scenery. We promised ourselves we will be back, this time trying the evening to immerse in the …

The canal is nothing great but it goes through the historic section of town where the museums are so you might as well take a walk along it while visiting the area

My husband and I specifically went to visit the Otaru canal for the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival last February 2020. We took the JR Train from Sapporo station to Otaru Station. It took us almost an hour one way and the train was full both ways.
The long trip was worth it when we saw the lanterns light up and the snow sculptures.
And of course, we had the famous LeTao sweets on our way back to the station.

I visit Otaru Canal in February 2020 means lots of snow, cold, -6°, windy and snow festival all along the street and park.
I stop at Otaru Canal, this is the most romantic winter view, lots of candle from the winter festival volunteer. The view was dramatic and lots of people as well.
But I take some picture for you.
Please check the winter festival around the Otaru Canal before you visit here
But in others seasons, Otaru will be fine and beautiful as well. Hope I can visit here again and again.

We did a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo. The canal is Sooo beautiful. Luckily it wasn't too crowded, we went in February. I wonder if the Coronavirus had something to do with that. Regardless the lack of crowds made the experience that much more enjoyable.

Have you ever thought of hitting the Canal street in the winter time, maybe when the snow festival is ongoing? Try it!

Love the view so much. Spent around 1hour here before going nearby cafe.
Is a must visit list for Otaru, hence is crowded during peak period of the day.
