Quick and frequent direct buses to and from Otaru station can take you to this really gorgeous view - be sure to view it by day and by night. Options for ziplining and hot air ballooning as well. Cool Tengu shrine and display (if you're into Tengu)...kind of lame ski museum and overpriced restaurant. Still, a must-see in Otaru on a clear day/night.

After visiting the Otaru canal, we had a delicious lunch at one of the outlets at the Denuki-koji, diagonally opposite one end of the canal.

A short distance from Denuki- koji is the Otaru Canal terminal where we you could board the bus either to Osaka Aquarium or to Mt. Tengu. Each trip costs 220 yen and you are advised to have the exact change upon alighting. The trip takes about 24 minutes.

From the bus-stop at Tenguyama, you’ll be greeted by the lovely snow-filled slopes where skiing is a common past-time.

Buy a ticket and take the Tengu ropeway up to the observatory platform atop the 532m Mt. Tengu to have a wonderful view of the mountains and the town below. Be exhilarated by the awesome views. The snow cover for the day we were there was 75cm and temperature was minus 9 degrees C in the morning.

Check out the Japanese Igloo of Tengu where you can write your wishes on the message candle and leave them in the igloo. In the evenings, there is a candle lit pathway to the Otaru Tenguyama shrine and a few candles lit near the observation spots that make for beautiful pictures.

Check out the Otaru Ski Museum which documents Otaru’s ski development and glorious history. Some souvenirs can also be bought and you can have a meal there whilst enjoying the awesome views.

Highly recommend a visit here.

the cable car ride to the top is the first exciting part of views of the mountain and the town below. At the top there are excellent view points to look over the town of Otaru. The cafe also good spot to sit and have a meal or drink and view surrounds. Ski slopes look good and definitely not packed.
There is glass making factory/shop worth having a look.

We came here end of November and could see snow all around. We were able to play in the snow.

You can see the panoramic view of Otaru and Japan Sea.

It was a nice experience and we enjoyed it.

Take a bus from otaru bus terminal (bus 9) to tengu ropeway and gondola up. Trip was OK. View up there is great. Only disappointed the bobsleigh was closed for the autumn season. The place to feed chipmunks also closed. So literally just walk around to take pictures. Can visit if you love taking panaromic photos of cities.

Off a cruise ship the first thing we did was get a taxi to the Tenguyama ropeway. It would’ve been a lot cheaper on the bus which we did on the way back.

The cable car runs frequently. This is not a terribly high mountain at 532m but it affords great views of the city below.

There are three shrines there which were good photo opportunities. Also if you’re feeling energetic and have the time there’s a 30 minute hike you can take and a dry bobsleigh run which was a bit of fun. 7 years and over I think to be able to have a go.

There’s a cafe and a shop as always. I bought some lovely chop sticks there as souvenirs and they were much cheaper than we saw anywhere else surprisingly.

Apart from the views the other bit of fun was feeding sunflower seed to the charming little chipmunks in a large enclosure. They’ll happily demolish seeds from your hand with no danger to your person!

Would recommend this trip.

We took the cable car to reach the top. You can look at the city from the lookout there. Interesting place.

We went to Mount Tengu as part of cruise ship tour group, which limited the time that it was possible to spend there. Access to the place takes a few minutes by an elderly cable car. Our limited time and the rainy weather meant that the views, probably stunning in good conditions, and the other outside activities could not be fully appreciated. The cable car terminal at the summit appears to be of the same vintage as the transportation; it has a cafe and a gift shop selling trash.

We took an early ride to the mountain with the cable car.
Probable we were 2 of the total 10 people there...that made it really nice compared to the cities we have been visiting.
Take bus 9 from platform 4 in front to the train station. The tickets are 220/ person/ ride or can get a full day ticket that includes the cable car for 1700.
The cable car ride is about 5 minutes. The view of the city and the harbour is really nice.
We took a hike around the mountain that is about 20-30 minutes. We have not seen anybody else so really nice one.
The museums are interesting but for me the best part was the glass factory at the base. You can watch as they blow and mold the hot molten glass into beautiful products.
For my husband feeding the Chipmunks was the highlight...so something for everyone.
