Its a short cruise and probably because we took the cruise in the day the canal didn't seem very interesting. Even though there isn't much to see but the history of Otaru Canal is interesting. We manage to get the tickets for the first cruise so the ticket counter wasn't so packed. Along the warehouse are some shops that you can have a beer or food.

The cruise is not overwhelming, but ok. It cruises along the canal, with some historical information provided. Some parts are quite pretty. It was drizzling then, so that dampened it a bit.

Feels like someone in the city hall decided that they need to sell the canal with pretty captains and young, strong young rickshaw guys. Did he/she think about spending money to beautify the place? Nope. Everything is overprice there. We went to other cities in Hokkaido, and got very good food with affordable price. But not in Otaru. The canal is so so. We rode at night with a pretty, young captain. You know all the lights that they showed on the ad, not really there. It’s a dark canal and we paid more to ride at night. A lot of the pics showed whether it’s about the canal ride or the food, were enhanced. And yes, the mic was not really working. The captain talked too loud (in Japanese of course). You do not really get what you see in the pics which screams lawsuit in US, but not there... Go somewhere else! Or do other things! Unless they start improving the canal...

I had to persuade my brothers and boyfriend to go along but they are glad they went. Very interesting information given about the canal. It was a nice sunny day with a chill in the air, not to worry because the seats are heated. Everyone must wear a flotation device around the waist. Very calm water so it seems very safe. Beautiful scenery to take in as you're going down the canals.

We went on this 5 pm sunset canal cruise as part of a day trip. We were the only non Asian persons on the boat and we were not given a head set to listen to the continuous 40 minute commentary in English that might have made the cruise more interesting. All the conversation was In Japanese. Our highlight was the heated seats and blanket on our knees. We were given a waist belt safety vest but no instruction on how to use it. With my offshore experience I was probably only one of the few who knew how to use such equipment. The cruise would be totally uncomfortable if it had rained as the boat had no roof because of the low bridges the boat had to go under. The boat was in excellent condition and very stable because of its broad beam. Tour was boring.
