Beautiful architecture
Nov 2019
The building itself is worth a visit. This is not meant to detract from the interesting, worthwhile exposition of modern art.
You can actually walk to it from Gora train station.

This is the second time I’ve visited the Pola museum . The exhibits rotate so there’s always something new .A fantastic collection of impressionist painting ,
The food is good in the restaurant and there’s a great trail around the woodland grounds .

Great art, beautiful building, in the japanese
Aug 2019
A real surprise in a rural location. Fascinating exhibition comparing great artists and contemporaries who worked in a similar style. Matisse, Picasso, Dali, Bonnard, .
But best of all was “citadines” by celine hougelmont . A blue pool with bowls floating, touching each other and making surreal sounds. Che k it you tube. Beautiful.
HAkone is worth a visit.

The best kind of surprise

Touring the Hakone area in the pouring rain, we had no idea what a gem we would find in this stunning art museum. An interesting mix of impressionists (Monet, Renoir, Manet), a little bit of Picasso and a lot of contemporary Japanese art. The building itself has been constructed very cleverly in the side of a hill. This is really worth a visit - interesting space with wonderful art.

Unexpectedly Good
Sep 2019 • Couples
This is a modern style museum with a great architectural building, restaurant, shop and well presented art including an outdoor nature walk (don’t miss this). The core of the museum holdings are western impressionist art. The permanent collection is limited in size but the museum has created a great exhibit by which they off set their older masterpieces with contemporary works. In this way viewers get a old and new perspective on a specific theme. For example a Monet ‘waterlillies’ is displayed next to a modern art installation that involves water and floating bowls that make sounds as they bump against each other. Both art pieces explore the role of water in art and presenting them this way (there are 12 different themes) created a great viewing experience and was so much better than just walking through a gallery looking at one impressionist piece after another. I loved the overall presentation, this museum and the natural setting that it inhabits. Quite and unexpected pleasure. I give it only 4 stars because the museum is on the smallest size, but everything about the way this museum handles its collection is world class.

Nice place for a rainy day
Aug 2019 • Friends
We were on a day trip from Tokyo unfortunately raining all day in Hakone. The Pola museum is a good place to spend a bit of time indoors and appreciating the impressionist art. The outdoor trail is very lovely and worth a good 20-30mins walk. There’s a milk bar right before the entrance of Pola museum which serves very good milk ice cream from different regions and one of the highlights of our visit there. The restaurant is popular for lunch and reasonably priced, with a beautiful view.

Impressionist Art amidst the tranquil forest
May 2019 • Family
The Pola is a beautifully designed art museum in a spectacular wooded corner of Hakone. The collection of art is primarily Western with some interesting local Japanese examples. Impressionism in particular is well represented and includes a very fine painting by Monet of his most famous scene - the Japanese bridge and water lily pond. The art gallery shop is also good as is the cafe with cakes inspired by the paintings.

Brilliant art in a beautiful setting
Jun 2019 • Couples
It takes a few hours to get to Hakone from Tokyo so we had to plan our trip carefully to fit in what we wanted to see. Shinkansen from Tokyo to Odawara, then local train then local bus. The local train ride was special because of the scenery and the track was lined with Blue Hydrangeas in flower. We went to the POLA Museum of Art and what treasures did we find!. Art from the mid 19th Century through Impressionism to more modern times. Most of the significant Impressionist artists are represented. Well worth a visit and the restaurant does a good value lunch. Just wish we'd had more time to explore the nature trail before our return journey as it is in such a beautiful setting.
