This is a very nice and calm place in the forest, just a short walk from the nearest bus stop. Actually we came to see all those little statues. We liked it very much. But the most beautiful thing is the stairway ! From certain perspectives it's floating and looks very surreal. The kids also liked the koi pond at... More

Do no waste your time and money in museums in Hakone, instead go to this magnificient budhist temple. Surrounded by small statues, the charm of this temple is magic and mysterious.

We stopped at this temple just before a sunset on a cloudy day so it was pretty dark but still very spookily charming seeing all the statues on a wooded slope above the temple.

I found the Buddhism temple in Google Map near my hotel in Sengokuhara because it had a traditional Chinese name Chang'an (it's read as Choanji in Japanese but written as same kanji/character in both Chinese and Japanese). I'm very interested in the culture and history between China and Japan, so I made my... More

This is unique in that there are over 500 monk statues on site. However, I would not go out of my way to see it again. Pleasant enough but not essential in your visit to Hakone.

this was the tip of our cab driver and it was a wonderful surprise : more than 500 buddhas in a forest - each figure presents a monk who has learned and been living at this temple - mystic atmosphere...we were the only ones there, not well known. (about half way up the paved way which ends in a cemetery... More
