This shrine is lovely, partly because it's lovely and colourful, but partly because I just loved the wooded, mountainous setting of Nikko.

After seeing shrines in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, etc., I wasn't that enthuiastic about spending a lot of time at this one. However, the wooded somewhat mountainous setting makes this so much more of a enjoyable experience. I almost enjoyed the trees and the up/downhill...More

Very impressive formal building and history. With a guide, the place comes alive and you can appreciate much more the meanings of everything that you see here.

Beautiful shrine with many steps. Elevation adds to the beauty of this sight. Noteworthy that Iemitsu Tokogawa was laid to rest here. Grand son of the great Iesuya. Completed this loop by visiting his birth place in Kawagoe, Saitama.

This involves going up a number of stairs but a nice walk and gives a peaceful view. Shrine itself is very quiet and has some lovely motifs and structures. Lovely to take a walk without much disturbance and in peace and quiet.

This is another beautiful shrine and very peaceful, as it is given a miss by many tourists. We were the only folks there on an early morning. Not as flashy and ornate as Toshu-go but worth a visit nevertheless, as it is in the same...More
