Great Views of the Castle!
Oct 2020
This is the main street in Himeji that links the train station with the famous Himeji Castle. It is neat to see the castle upon exiting the train station. As for the street itself, I found it to be clean but not a whole lot of shops that interested me. I prefer the arcade style streets on either side of Otemae Street. At night some of the lights around the road and train station are fun to look at, but the views of the castle are the main highlight.

Every shop you want in a covered pedestrian mall
Jan 2020
I was on crutches so couldn't go far from my hotel, and Otemae Street was luckily very close. All the different food options, convenience stores and other shops (pharmacy, clothes, nik-naks etc) made it a great place for me to get what I needed quickly and easily! And being covered with a roof meant I didn't have to worry about the rain.

On a lonely street with flocks of birds and shadows of the castle
Dec 2019
I arrived in Himeji at 5 pm on December 5, 2019, walked from Himeji train station to the castle while
thousands of birds miraculously flew in the sky above the street for a long time and enjoy walking through beautiful sculptures and pipe covers. There was no light shining at the castle as expected and shown in tourist brochures. When I went back to the train station, I hoped to stopping by shopping streets on the way. All I met was loneliness. There was probably a lively thing at that time was the flock of birds with cute voices on Ginkgo trees and only one local restaurant served me the last bowl of delicious ramen before closing at 7 pm.

Main thoroughfare
Nov 2019
Otemae Street was the main street leading from JR station to Himeji Castle. It would take about 15 minutes walking time to just walk through the thoroughfare excluding shopping, eating and phototaking time spent along the way. It was impressive to take photos on Himeji Castle from the purpose-built platform just in front of the train station.

Offers Castle Views
Oct 2019
We walked along this broad boulevard from the train station to the castle in about 15 minutes. During that time, we had continuous views of Himeji Castle, which is at the end of the straight street. As we drew closer and closer, it became obvious why the beautiful structure has earned the designation of National Treasure in Japan.

The street itself is quite busy with vehicular traffic and it is possible to take a bus along the thoroughfare to the castle. But we enjoyed the short walk along the clean, wide sidewalk, and occasionally stopped to look at some of the bronze statues by Japanese sculptors that have been erected here along the way. I especially liked the artwork on the manhole covers, which feature stylized white birds.

Many tall, modern buildings stand along the street. I noted shops and restaurants, but they appeared to have little activity when we passed by at 9 a.m. It was already quite hot and sunny at that time in early October, so when we returned to the station, we opted to walk on Miyuki Street. It is a covered shopping arcade that runs parallel to Otemae and offers a cooler temperature and myriad small shops.

Hidden planet of shops
Oct 2019
This is a main street between the train station and himeji castle. If all you did was ride cabs up and down you would be oblivious to the covered malls that stretch for blocks along side the road. Streets have been roofed over and closed to vehicular traffic making for wide promenades.

SUMMER IN OTEMAE STREET
Aug 2018 • Family
Otemae Street is the access road to Himeji Castle from Himeji Station. Just walking straight from Himeji Station we can see the magnificent beauty of Himeji Castle along Otomae Street which is about 1 km from Himeji Station.

The sidewalks along the way are very neat, clean, wide, shady and comfortable. I did not feel hot because of the heat of the sunrise because we visited during the summer and arrived right in the afternoon when the sun was very hot.

Many shady trees, shops, restaurants, convenient stores along the way.It is definitely true that Japan is a pedestrian paradise. Every driver in Japan will prioritize pedestrians.

So we fun and enjoy walking along the road while looking at Himeji Castle from a distance.

Main path from train station to the castle
Apr 2019 • Couples
It's actually an easy walk from the station to the castle up this street. We decided to take a bus which actually took longer due to traffic than if we had walked. There is shopping along the way and even a covered arcade filled with more shops.

Street is nothing special, view on the other hand is great
May 2018 • Couples
It is the quickest way to go from the station to the Himeji castle which is what I assume most visitors are there for. It is a nice street, nothing special. But the view on a stunning Himeji castle makes this an enjoyable walk to the main event.
