Active volcano, nice urban escape

I took the bus up to the Yunohiro Observatory and walked down to the ferry terminal. It's a hike but a great day trip.

The bus ride was disappointing, claustrophobic , short stops. Much better to stroll aong the seashore path. Nowhere to hve beer and watch the water.

Central feature of Kagoshima. One might question the logic of visiting an active volcano on an island where there would be no escape* in case of a sudden eruption, but this place is beautiful and offers great views. I was reassured it was (quite) safe however, and surprisingly, people actually lived there! *a previous eruption connected the Southwest part of... More

Had fun on the crowded sightseeing bus, and biking the lava path. Would not rent a car and do a whole day thing if you're trying to choose between several options.

Honestly, it was a bit boring. There were obviously not enough tourist attraction here. Still, it was one of the must visit in Kagoshima.

This is a pretty island, it is also a volcano all it needs is a Bond villain to be totally over the top! We enjoyed the day we spent here and it is a unique experience. The bus that takes you to the various sights is worth doing as is the visitor centre.

Because of bad weather, I was never able to get a good look...but it looks more impressive from a distance rather than in Sakurajima...took the Island View Bus but none of the three viewpoints offers much...not worth going out of the way for...

It's easy to get to Sakurajima. Take the City View bus to Kagoshima Aquarium. The ferry pier is just there. The ride takes only 15 minutes. Most tourists will just take the Sakurajima City View bus. It was what I planned to do, finishing the whole trip in one hour. While waiting for the bus, I saw a car rental... More

Once arrived at the island by ferry, if there is a visitor center close by, and it has a lot of information informing visitors about the formation of the island and sightseeing around the island. We drove to the closest observation deck, and was in awe by the magnitude to where the lava once covered by the few explosions during... More

It's a very small island. Nice to drive around. If you have already seen lots of other volcanoes then this is not going to be very impressive. Not more than 4 hours even if done very leisurely. Not many eating option.
