The shrine is all about the great castle view. Nothing special on the shrine itself, but privileged outpost. One can see well the dimension of this giant of a castle, even though it will be covered with scaffolding for post-earthquake repair work for the next...More

Located inside Kumamoto castle compound. It is not an elaborate huge shrine, but a normal looking shrine. Due to its proximity to the castle towers, it is the perfect location if you want a closed up photo of the towers.

While the shrine itself is nothing special there is a perk to this place. It offers a great view of the castle, especially now that you cannot get to the castle due to reconstruction.

Since the castle is not accessible, this is the only good place to see the castle for now. People from the bottom, when they see the closed sign, some of them turn around. But you can still enjoy the rest of area, including this shrine,...More

He was a famous war lord. A nice shrine close to the main building of Kumamoto Castle. This shrine is across the moat so you can see some of the damaged areas around the castle from the Kato Shrine.

Place is basically a shrine to Japanese soldiers. A tent was set up when we were there, presumably ready for a big ceremony.

You will not miss this, look for the giant torii as you walk towards the castle. There is a view spot that gives you great views of Kumamoto jo.

Stop here after touring the castle. We spent a very long morning at the castle and so had just a brief time left for the shrine. That was sufficient. Kato Kiyomasa is enshrined here - as well as in about 90 other shrines. This makes...More

We went there after visiting Kumamoto Castle. The sunset was pretty, and the view onto the castle great. There isn't much to see, so don't expect to spend more than 15 to 20 min.
