About
These eight boiling pools resulting from volcanic activity have varying characteristics: one is blood-red in color due to its red clay deposits, another has the largest geyser in Japan, and still another is used for breeding crocodiles.

Get the Ticket to Visit all the Hells
Dec 2020
If you are a first time visitor, you have to start your Beppu tour with the Hells of Beppu. There are seven in total, the first five are all within walking distance and the next two are 3km away which is still walking distance. Each attraction is 400 Yen, or you can get a little booklet for 2000 Yen that includes all Hells of Beppu. All of them are pretty interesting and different. I wasn't a fan of the crocodile exhibit just based on how they were kept, but all the other attractions were beautiful. There is plenty of parking at each attraction and all the walking paths are set up nicely. It is a bit touristy when compared to other natural phenomena attractions but it is well worth seeing.

Absolutely fascinating
Jul 2020
The Hells of Beppu were super interesting.. 7 in total, all withiin walking distance of each other. (albeit 2 are 3km from the others). Each are unique and the surrounding area is beautiful. Buses are available from the Beppu station, Tickets from the Tourist Information centre... (day pass) Something very different to see.

A must see location in Beppu
Feb 2020 • Friends
There's only two national class sight seeing points out of 10 in Beppu area. The Hell of Sea is the best one and you should never miss.

Hells of Beppu, not a hell, a fantastic place that you cannot miss!
Jan 2020
Beppu is very famous for its onsen (hot spring). The Eight Hells Onsen, Beppu is far from your imagination because you can see so many onsens in a place. The eight hell onsens are with individual characteristics. Regrettably that day I visited Beppu is raining heavily so I cannot visit all eight hot springs. I visited two, the first one is Kamado Hell it is famous for it steam so hot that can cook the egg. There are foot spa for free. After enjoy the free foot spa I try the egg and the traditional green tea rice cake. The second hell I visited is the Omi hell. The water is blue in colour so it is named Omi (the sea) The steam from the hot spring is so thick that you know how hot the water is. A souvenir centre is next to the Omi hot spring, first floor is selling souvenir, second floor is like a museum display pictures of Omi hot spring and its history. It is worth to take a look around. Although my visit is spoiled by the weather, at least I visited two wonderful hells (hot spring) I am very happy. One thing I feel very interesting is in Beppu you can find smoke are emitted from the ground, in the hillside that I did not find such view in any place yet. This is because of the volcanoes!

Many different hells
Dec 2019
It is fascinating to see many different hot springs in such a small area iand it is easy to walk about and visit them using the pass. The most impressive one is the 'bloody' hell . But my kids are a bit bored after visiting three or more hot springs.

Variety of natural hotsprings
Jan 2020 • Couples
I got quite confused reading about different reviews about hot springs in Beppu, probably because the reviews were written by individuals went to different individual hot springs.

We parked our car at Uni Jigoku and bought the ticket pack for all 7 hot springs at 2000 Yen per pax. In total, we spent 3 hours at first 5 then went for lunch and finished up the remainder 2, it’s worth the visit. If you buy individual ticket, it ranges from 400 Yen onwards.

1. Umi Jigoku
There’s foot bath in this hot spring but I preferred and tried the next one. Key highlight of the hot springs here is light blue and there’s plenty of opportunities for photography. Japanese garden here is beautiful.

2. Onnishibouza Jigoku
The foot bath in this hot spring is spacious and comfortable. Bring your own towel to dry foot after bath. Highlight hot spring here is dark grey and thick.

3. Kamado Jigoku
There’s demonstration by park keeper on how to spark the hot spring. Don’t miss the demonstrations. Highlight hot spring here is brown colour.

All 3 hot spring above is close to each other, enjoyable to walk. Next, prepared to walk about 10 minutes to the next 2 with 8m crocodile and 18 years old arrowana fish.

4. Oniyama Jigoku
There’s plenty of big and small enclosure with crocodiles. The largest one is about 8m long. It’s amazing how they can keep crocodiles in such cold weather. We could stay till 2:30pm for crocodile feeding, that would be amazing to watch.

5. Shiraike Jigoku
You will see difference types of fish being rare here. The highlight here is the 18 year old arrowana, it’s huge and majestic.

The next 2 hot springs are the smallest so allocate that till last. Note the hot spring closes at 5pm.

6. Chinoike Jigoku
This hot spring supposed to be red in colour but it was lighter colour then deep red. Nice to walk around and enjoy the trees around the area.

7. Tatsumaki Jigoku
Last demonstrations of the geyser is 20 minutes before it closes at 5pm but I believe there’s other timing. We saw the last one and it was spectacular.

Highly recommended if you are in Beppu, best preservation of what Mother Nature has given us to enjoy.

The best is the mud Jigoku
Jan 2020 • Couples
We visited all 7 Jigoku and found the second one to be the best. It has a boiling mud pool and we did our foot onsen here. There are 5 pools within Umi Jigoku, and another 2, which is a few minutes drive away. The 2 pools which are out of the main ones are smaller in comparison to the 5 pools but nevertheless they have their own attractions. There is the blood pool, the geyser one, mud pool and green ones too. Overall, its a very nice to spend half day here.
