Give it a Go

This was a unique experience. We did have to wait a little while but in nice surroundings so it wasn't too bad. Being burried in sand may sound weird but it is actually quite nice and the staff are all very friendly and respectful.

Less is More Part 438 - Terrific Tranquil Therapeutic Thermal Treatment
Jan 2020 • Family
Definitely a bucket list experience but one that also leaves you feeling uniquely relaxed after the ‘treatment’. We heard of the long waits so we tried to get there early. We arrived at 9:45 am and managed to secure the 10:30 am slot for our party of three. Found the ¥1050 charge fairly reasonable. Several ‘surprises’:

- The whole ‘facility’ is smaller than the expected - the change room, waiting area and shower area are all super compact!

- There are two sand pits side by side which can alternately accommodate and handle only twelve people at a time - hence the long wait during the peak hours.

- The sand is heavier and hotter than expected so do not hesitate to inform the lady attendants to make ‘adjustments’.

- The sand burial only lasts 15 minutes but feels quite adequate given the intense heat build-up.

- The attendants will assist in taking pictures with your phone cameras during the burial (and they are quite good at it!)

- Underwear is not allowed to be worn under the yukata provided.

Well worth a try

I think I got lucky (and the fact that I am trying alone) so when I got there, I didn’t have to wait two hours as disaplayed on the board but just 30 minutes as they had a single slot left at the next session.

The changing rooms are very small and old so don’t expect much but it also gives you that authentic flavour.

The sand on top of you is very heavy and hot too. You just have to wiggle a bit yourself to get into a comfortable (or bearable) position. It says no cameras but you can bring them in and the sand pouring ladies can help with photos once you are buried under!

You can rent towels from them for the shower after but might as well save a few hundred Yen by bringing one from the hotel.

Try once for experience, please come early to avoid crowded. Easy to go by train with JR pass and then you can take bus for sightseeing another place.

One of a kind experience
Dec 2019 • Family
This is a must do activity in Beppu. After you buy your tickets, you will need to wait for your turn as there's only that many place in the sand pit. Bring your own towel and shower cap for ladies if you do not want to pay for it. The ladies changing room is extremely small. Wear only the yukata provided and shower cap when you go to the sand pit. Bring the towel and your handphone with you when you go outside. The staff can help you take photo while you are being 'buried'. The sand is warm and heavy and the sound of the waves and cool air makes the 15-min experience very relaxing. Wash off the sand in the shower cubicle provided.

Unique experiance
Sep 2019
The Beppu Beach Sand Bath seems popular with locals and tourists alike. It can get busy so you may have to wait. After changing into a robe you are lead out to the beach where you lie down on the sand while women rake the hot sand over you. After about 20 minutes you are uncovered and go back into the showers to remove all the sand and if want soak in a hot spa. The sand was not a hot as I had expected (and compared to the spa) but more than sufficient to work up a sweat. The sand was also heavier than anticipated. If wanted you can give you phone (not sure about camera) to the ladies who will then take photos of you while buried, so don't leave them in the lockers with your clothes and other valuables when changing - the phones will be returned in plastic bags to prevent them getting sand or water on them!

Facilities are dirty and old.
Nov 2019
It was rather crowded when we arrived. The lady in the ticket booth hardly speak English. The changing room/locker is very small and cramp when a group of tourist change to their yukata, they speak very loudly and noisy. And in the shower room looks very messy dan dirty, another group of tourist are taking shower with the yukata after finished their sand bathing. Since we can't stand it anymore, we take our money back, we don't think we can enjoy it.

Good Experience but...
Nov 2019 • Family
The overall experience was good. Covered with sand up the neck at first was scary but it’s relaxing after you get over the fear. Sand is warm. Hope it can be longer than 10mins. The thing I was not expecting was the people... there were so many ... we don’t have enough space in the toilet. As we went around 3:30pm the place is also not so clean.

Great experience
Oct 2019 • Solo
After reading a few mixed reviews I was skeptical about going but was so glad I did. It really was a great experience - and very relaxing. When the staff member started to put the sand on top of me I thought I might get claustrophobic but I was absolutely fine. Take your phone with you so a staff member can take a photo for you.

Rather disappointing compared to Ibusuki
Oct 2019 • Couples
First of all, taking a sand bath is a really unique experience and definitely worth doing. We’ve already taken a sand bath in Ibusuki, which was truly amazing. Thus, we wanted to try the sand bath in Beppu as well. But the Beppu Beach Sand Bath left us rather disappointed. There are several reasons for our disappointment. Firstly, the whole facility is run-down and not very inviting. Especially the changing room as well as the showers and the inside onsen seem neglected. Secondly, the sand bath is highly frequented. There are long waiting times and the whole procedure has a touch of mass processing to it. Thirdly and most importantly, the sand wasn’t warm enough and we didn’t really get to sweat while lying underneath it. The sand in Ibusuki was much warmer and had a much stronger effect. All in all, I recommend to skip the sand bath in Beppu if you have the chance to visit Ibusuki.
