The river near the mangroves is great and - not that I want anyone to think I'm a lunatic - but for those people who can 'feel' or sense the presence of those no longer with us this is a place to be careful of, particularly the section near Route 58.
I asked Okinawan friends about it after I visited and they said there was a very fierce battle at the river and that the apartment block next to Route 58 and the river has some 'issues' with noises, things moving etc etc.
Again, I'm not a nutter nor a psychic at all but this place gave me the creeps big time!

If you are a history buff or a Karate history buff this is a must stop on your trip. You can see the monument and location of Kyan Chotoku's home and dojo.

Is it considered sacred ground? We're planning a trip to Okinawa next May and I want to make sure that I'm aware of areas that are special and honored so that I can be respectful (not that I wouldn't be respectful elsewhere, but you know what I mean).

Hi, I've been jogging along the river, and have gone on a kayaking tour near the Kadena area and the only places that are off limits in that area are the tombs. It's a very quiet and peaceful area, so as long as no one is making a commotion, you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip.
