The Grand Kenyan

Amazing rock formations tucked away half an hour drive from Malindi. Must visit. Saloon cars may not make it.

Quite a sight. A community run venture with a bar and some nice bandas to enjoy a slight breeze. We opted out of the long tour, takes about an hour circling this monumental hole in the ground. The layers of earth/clay are quite visible and our guide gave us a couple of stories the locals have told to explain it.... More

Marafa-Hells Kitchen is a place where erosion has led to some very stunning formations. We underestimated the time it took us to drive to the place from Malindi and could not go to the bottom. The funds collected from the visitors are used to develop and conserve the area as well as support the young men who serve as guides.... More

We only learnt about hells kitchen this year and decided to have a look - it being described to us as a mini grand canyon. I think that describes it pretty well. We did the whole tour including going down into the canyon- Not something we would want to repeat, temperatures were said to be around 50°C ( early afternoon... More

I visited there taking 1 hour by motorbike from Sabaki, the north of Malindi. Mysterious and weird landscape with naked layer of earth. Enjoyed hiking in almost desert area surrounded in green forest, under strong sunshine. Great scene from the top of cliff. Be more careful of sun burning than seaside in Malindi. The story that the guide told us... More

I've been told it's the Grand Canyon of Kenya and wasn't really sure what to expect. It was about an hour from our resort (which is about 20 minutes north of Malindi town). The roads are rough, so suggest a car with higher clearance. Once you arrive, you can walk around and into the canyon and out in about an... More

We were in Malindi and decided to follow the recommendations of Kenya (Lonely Planet) volume. It was mentioned that this was a mini "Gran Canyon", and frankly speaking this was as close as the truth as it could be. Some of the stones, when you crush them they give you three different colors. Amazing place. Worth the drive/ride. Make sure... More

About an hours drive from where we were staying at Mwembe Resort but well worth the drive. I recommend you take a tour van or go with locals otherwise you may think you're lost. Amazing landscape and folklore explain the natural formation of Marafa Hell's Kitchen. This is ancestral land and its managed by the local community who charge a... More

It was really beautiful and we had a nice walk! If you're lucky you can even see monkeys. It is a 1,5 hour drive but worth it.
