Come Home to Historic Splendour

'ONE OF 10 GREATEST MANSIONS IN THE WORLD' LONELY PLANET 2011

A Grand Mansion conceived and constructed by a Grand Man; an eminent edifice which History calls Home; a peerless representation of the Paradigm Chinese Courtyard House – the Cheong Fatt Tze “Blue” Mansion has been perfectly poised for over a century on firm foundations of architectural, cultural and historic superlatives.

Essentially an ‘heirloom with rooms’, today, the Mansion readily bequeaths its charms to visitors who are able to indulge in Exclusive Heritage Homestays; **Guided Tours; and Tailored Functions on its premises. Reputedly the favourite home of the “Last Mandarin and First Capitalist of China”, the Mansion is undoubtedly the favourite home of George Town.

With only a couple of rooms open to visitors, there really wasn't much for Clement the guide to say. But he talked for 40 minutes nevertheless, when he could have said it all in 10. He seemed to need to speak for so long in order to justify the entrance fee when in fact this was unnecessary. Just tell the... More

The facade is really impressive, but only few parts of the house can be seen during the tour. This maybe a good hotel, but not so much for a museum as there's very little on display. You might enjoy the long stories of the guide if you like such, but I prefer to actually SEE displays in a museum than... More

This is apparently transformed into a hotel so you can stay there is you want. The mansion is only opened 3 times a day with tour. It is only opened at 11am, 2pm and 3.30pm so take note of the timings if you want to visit. I think my guide was the female owner of the mansion. She is really... More

This is a 45 minute tour costing 17 Ringgit. The Blue Mansion gets generally good reviews but of the more than 60 countries I have been this is by far the worst tour I have ever been on. Right from the beginning the guide was making exaggerated hand and arm movements constantly laughing at her own jokes and smiling at... More

A really interesting historical tour of the Blue Mansion. We learned a lot about Cheong Fatt Tze and his influence in Penang. It's a shot tour, but the tour guide was fantastic! Enthusiastic and engaging

One of the places that you must visit in Penang! A lot of history contained in the Blue Mansion. Remember to book in advance as there are timings for the guided tours in English/Chinese (tours are ~45mins so make sure you have ample time).

When this house was still in disrepair the actor, Catherine Deneuve, visited it for a opium den scene in the movie 'Indochine'. Since then it's been renovated and most of the house is now a hotel but there is still the centre section which you can visit. It's interesting but in my opinion probably doesn't deserve being in Lonely Planets... More
