I have enjoyed steam train voyages all over the world, and would have loved to travel on this one. I had to stick to platform photos though, because It was just too expensive as a day trip. Shame really.

The North Borneo Raileay is a steam train excursion. Climb aboard and you could be back in the days of thr North Borneo Company. It is a train pulled on the narrow gauge line by a 1954 wood-burning locomtive built in Lancashire (pulling Japanese carriages). No air-con, but there are plenty of good fans in the ceiling. And the windows... More

This was the highlight of my husband's holiday. We booked this months beforehand so as not to be disappointed. As the trip only goes on Wednesday or Saturday and we could only go on the Wednesday during the Christmas holiday period, we made sure we got our places. Everything went like clockwork. The service from the staff was excellent. Breakfast... More

Beautifully restored steam rail ride recreating the travel of bygone days. Gracious guards and conductors ensure passengers are well looked after during the train ride and the visits to local temple and markets. Delicious tiffin lunch provided. Highly recommend this trip to everyone.

First off, I did not take the wooden steam train. I did not see the reason why to. But anyways, I'm a budget solo traveller, so yea. I took the cheapest one, which cost me ringgit 1.85 from Tanjong Aru train station to Papar station. The journey took about an hour or so. It's best to be there by 7.45am.... More

We travelled on the North Borneo Railway booked through Borneo trails on 11th January. From start to finish everything was well organised and gives you a perspective of train travel in colonial times. Staff were courteous and informative. Food was fine. As with all tours it's important to be open minded and to embrace the experience as no doubt at... More
