The medina in Essaouira is very relaxed with far less aggressive selling than in Fes and Marrakesh. You can walk around without being hounded to death.

I loved the Medina in Essaouira. There are not many motorcycles, unlike Marrakech, so it feels safe and is great to give kids a taste of Morocco. The shop owners are friendly and most are not pushy which is lovely. You can see craftsmen working...More

Medina of Essaouira is a very laid back area. It has a big souk (local market) where you can find pretty much anything for tourism. Many shops offering variety of hand made wooden products and rugs including famous Berber rugs. There is a spice market...More

The Medina of Essaouira is an enchanting slice of culture and history, full of suprising little gems. Take a guided tour if you can to get the most out of the experience, and learn about some of the fascinating history of the place. Highly recommended.

Worth visiting a couple of times, decent bargains on spices and shirts, look at the co-operative just outside the walls for wool wear. Just off the main Sq and North gate is best for rugs and throws but bargain hard, at least 40% below asking...More

The medina in Essaouira has a lot to offer. From winding narrow streets to rooftops overlooking the city and ocean. It's a fun place to explore and the cuisine great. Only downside are a few very persistent locals trying to sell their goods, but that...More

We stayed in Marrakech but did an overnighter to Essaouira. We actually liked the markets of Essaouira better than the Souks of Marrakech. Comfortable weather, and a bit less seller pressure. Overall cleaner for us wary westerners

Good shopping and eating. Great shaves. No haranguing as in Fes or especially Marrakesh. Great cafes, especially a few local ones.

It's about 2 hours from Marrakesh, costs about 1000 Dhs for private car. Ours was easily arranged by our Dar (small hotel).
