Low Expectations = Okay Experience
Apr 2021 • Solo
Have very low expectations and you may be pleasantly surprised — or not. The only cool part about this museum is that it’s underground. Tiny collection. A serious lack of skulls and daggers. Mostly just rock fragments and ropes. Took maybe 20 minutes from start to finish, including reading all of the available signs/literature.

Very Well Organized Museum

The museum is very compact, but well organized. Interesting way to present information is a great advantage. Numerous classes for kids are also quite popular.

Small but very interesting!
Jul 2019
I went to this museum during Summer. It was early on in the day and there was only one other person in the museum. I absolutely loved it. It was an incredible glimpse into historic Russia. I particularly enjoyed the section with the children's clay toys.
I would say that if you're a lover of archaeology and it interests you to see little trinkets from a time long ago, then this small museum is absolutely for you. It's perfectly located, and won't take up too much time, but will definitely leave a good impression.
I'm not sure if young kids would enjoy this one, as it wasn't super interactive. Also, do take note that there are not many descriptions of things, so if you want a detailed immersive history lesson, this isn't the place for you.

A great little museum.

I really enjoyed my visit here, more so than the archaeology galleries of the State Historical Museum. The museum is based around the excavations of a 16th century bridge, and it brings historical Moscow to life. There are a wide range of artefacts on display and some informative models.
Despite it's specialist nature, I recommend everyone take a look at this museum. Be aware that the access is via a lot of steps!

Museum of Archeology
Jan 2017 • Solo
While the museum is not the most popular one, you cannot say it's 'off the beaten path'.
It's exactly ON 'the beaten path', between the Red Square and Tverskaya street.
The finds made during construction and reconstruction works in Moscow - and these never seem to come to an end - make the bulk of the exposition.
In fact, the museum space as such is sort of archeological site - you need to go down the stairs, the rooms are underground, the same level as the metro.
Kids would love the practical 'archeological studies'.
The address is 1a Manezh square - opposite the Museum of History
The site only operates in Russian, but you can look there for the map and the photos

Tourist trap, very low value
Apr 2017 • Solo
While the findings could be very interesting, they are not properly cataloged. I genuinely believe the person responsible for the planning and cataloging of the displays was drunks. There is no logic in the displays, periods, or info provided.
It is also expensive. Do not go!

Great little museum, not that informative without an audioguide. It is free for students having ISIC card.

Underground gem
May 2016 • Solo
Given its supreme location and cheap ticket, I think that this museum deserves to be much higher on the list of interests for tourists visiting Moscow.
Collection is not that big, but is very well organised and informative.
Special praise goes to virtual reality machines which are located in one part of the museum and you can use them to see how that particular place where you standing looked in history. Very nice indeed.

A view of Moscow many years ago, back to the Stone Age
Mar 2016 • Solo
Some nice exhibitions from the Bronze and Stone age, and some more modern exhibitions, including original preserved pieces of the old bridge.

Not an extensive collection, but what there is is well presented
Jan 2016 • Couples
This is a small museum with a modest but eclectic collection of artefacts harvested from excavations in Moscow, and spans everything from Palaeolithic flints to more recent items such as coins from the 1700s. The items are really well displayed with most signage in English as well as Russian. My only bugbear: some signs don't give the age of the items (neither in Russian nor English); in one display case were shards of pottery & the sign described them as being "amongst the oldest items" in the museum, but no indication of just how old! Otherwise, a pleasant enough way to spend an hour or so.
