Interesting museum, worth to go
May 2019
If you have time, not on the top of your list by any means, but if you have extra time or near Gorky Park, go. I think I spent about 1-1.5 hours here, but probably could have spent longer. But I didn't want to waste too much time. But anyway, it is a good museum, modern, and very interesting for some of the work. Go if you have extra time, if not, when you come back to Russia a second time, then go. If you miss it, no big deal. But interesting nevertheless.

For modern/contemporary art lovers

This fantastic museum is another must see if you are visiting Moscow and you love modern art. It’s a bit far from the main State Tretyakov Gallery, but it’s totally worth a trip. You will see many famous paintings here, the collection is wonderful! Besides, there is a lovely garden outside the building that contains many beautiful statues and sculptures as well. Plan at least two hours here. We unfortunately had only one hour and so we didn’t see everything (we skipped on temporary exhibits). The entrance is also 500 rubles just like the State Tretyakov Gallery and it has longer opening hours on some days too. There were almost no people when we visited in the evening so if you want some space while strolling, come after 6 PM on one of those days.

GLORIOUS ART COLLECTION IN NON DESCRIPT BUILDING
Jan 2020
This is the 2nd part of the Tretyakov Galleries (the 1st part is closer to the Red Square, and houses Russian art up to the 19th century).
This “New tretyakov Gallery” sits along the Moscow River about a mile south of Red Square and deals with Russian art from 1900 to nowadays.
Although you will easily recognize Chagall, Kandinsky and Malevich masterpieces, there are hundreds of gorgeous paintings by other brilliant Russian artists whose works unfortunately do not feature in our western galleries.
You will need a day to do it justice, as the museum has a huge permanent collection as well as interesting temporary exhibits : Russian abstract art, constructivists, cubists, expressionists, you name it!
A couple of rooms also exhibit soviet propaganda paintings and it is indeed very interesting to discover the Russian psyche through the eyes of Russian artists. (Some huge murals from the Soviet era are certainly impressive and powerful even if dated. The Rublyov painting of Stalin, or that of Pavlov will leave you trying to decide what the painter was really thinking...)
Although my knowledge of art is quite extensive, I had little exposure to the great Russian artists whose works are contained in this museum, and my visit proved to be a real treat.
Just wished I had more time!
Across from Gorky park and very easily accessible by subway.

Mixed experience

Went to see Biennale Moscow and exhibition of Russian manufacturing. Biennale give some great artworks but same time some not so great art works. Place it self wasn’t crowded and price are friendly. If going to Gorky park and everything around it, definitely take your time and see this place too.

Fantastic Russian Artwork
Nov 2019
Not just Chagall and Kandinsky but other artists' paintings that I had never seen before. A must see place for those who are fans of impressionism.

Very good modern Art Museum
Aug 2019
A great collection of Russian Modern Artists, well presented in large halls. Due to an exhibition, I had to wait in a queue outside but it was all worth it. Highly recommended even if you do not know much about Russian Modern Art.

AMAZING! and the album picture posted here is actually not from the NEW Tretyakov Gallery

There they were! The great Russian art modern and fun and bitter that I came looking for! The building is in the Gorky Park, so, make sure to check out the statues all around. The museum was great, easy to follow, not so crowded (except downstairs around the cloakroom). Excellent pieces to admire. Only be aware of the system they use to enter the museum: a handful of people every 15 minutes (?) not sure why, the museum is big, but be prepared to stand on a long line for a while.

Wonderful and wish I had more time
Aug 2019
This is Art that we in the West never see in the flesh! Could easily spend about three days here and only spent about 4 hours, so had to skip some areas.Just a brilliant experience. I temporarily 'lost' my husband but the Staff helped me find him; I didn't have any money on me to get to a particular exhibition but one wonderful woman saw my plight and paid for Me. I will always be eternally grateful for this kindness shown.

Love this museum! Who knew Russian Artists are as good or better than better known European artists.

When my husband and I discuss our trip to Russia, we still talk about this gallery. It's very close to the Metro so we got there easily in about 20 minutes from Sokolniki. Go early. We got there at opening. Checked our coats and began the tour. We quickly lost our way. They have a "suggested route" that we never could find. No matter. we started at the beginning. The audio tour you can get does not describe every painting which is too bad. Luckily, the placards are in English, as well.

The quality of art here is amazing. Even after seeing the Hermitage, this museum was our favorite of our Russian trip.

Tips: It has a wonderful dining room that serves excellent food (better than Hermitage) So stop midway in your day and eat lunch.

Take the guided tour. (we didn't)

Bathrooms were free and had toilet paper

After it closes, hang out in the neighborhood and have dinner as there are lots of restaurants. There is also a two story McDonalds that seemed to be a hotspot for dating teens. Very clean.
