Once it was the largest shopping complex of old Moscow, which occupied a whole block near the Kremlin and Red square. Now it is, apparently, has no longer such status, because near the Kremlin should be banned multi-storey development. Although during the reconstruction at the beginning of this century, the facade , facing Varvarka street and Moskva river, was overbuilt, because of what the appearance of the historical building "was modernized" and lost its aesthetic uniformity and integrity, and with them its unique charm. But in terms of prestige only very few places can compete with the current Gostiny Dvor. I have seen many different celebrities here. This beautiful, big store is located between the Ilinka street and Varvarka street on the north and south, and the two backstreets on the west and east, that are Hrustalnyy(Crystal) alley and Rybnyy(Fishy) alley. We walked there from the Red Square that is very close to this indoor market. It is a really one great shopping centre whose name derives from guest court or merchant yard. Sometimes, here in so called Kitai - Gorod existed the small shops where merchants from the other cities were coming to sell their wares and goods. Very interesting is architectural style of such structures that were constructed in every large Russian town in the first decades of the XIXth century. They almost all have got one long arcade wit the domed roof supported by the frame of curved metal bars. The architecture is breathtaking. It is a perfect place to hold official events such as dinners and VIP reception. I will dream to hold a wedding there!

The building is very close to the Red Square. You can combine the Red Square, Gostiny Dvor, English Court and Romanov's House into this walk around this part of the center. Everything is in a short walking distance and with a visit to the Romanov's House will take about an hour or so. …
