Unexpectedly for me Detinets has a great museum on its territory. There you can find "gramotas" which became my main impression from the city, archive pictures and maby other things.

Novgorod has one of the oldest Kremlins in Russia and it is a great place to visit. The museums inside are excellent and the Cathedral a joy. Millennium Monument is very impressive. Well worth a few hours.

2 days will give you ample time to see the sites and to relax. Always beneficial with a local guide, but not necessary. I cannot recommend any hotel. Enjoy your stay.
