Definitely must see

Definitely must see in Veliky Novgorod. One of the best Kremlins we've seen in Russia. Very interesting and just nice for walking.

Well maintained fortress by a lake in the old town of Veliky Novgorod. Not so far from St. Petersburg, but communications are slow. Best way to travel is by buss or private car. Travel time around 2,5 hours. Viliky Novgorod was an important town when the vikings ruled the countries around the Baltic sea. Vikings navigated their ships on the... More

We started with our exploration of Veliky Novgorod from this elongate high redbrick wall, that stretches along the left bank of river Volhov, the river that outflows from the Lake Ilmen. And the city of Veliky Novgorod itself, is situated just below this outflow from the lake. Perfectly to stand the first defence lines in those long time passed medieval... More

I visited the Novgorod Kremlin with a local tour guide and learnt that the site was originally the site of a pagan burial ground upon which a cathedral was built around 989 or so. The current fortress was built between 1484 and 1490. It is situated on the left bank of the Volkhov river. The Kremlin is a large oval,... More

It is interesting old capital of Russia. The Kremlin is on the river bank and walking across the bridge shows how huge it is

Beautifully preserved buildings and peaceful compared to St Petersburg. The bell tower and walking the wall are worthwhile for 300 roubles (combo ticket). Nice views. St Sophia's church is beautiful inside.

Perfect combination between historical sites and relaxing. There is a beach next to the Kremlin. Must see! I would recommend to go to the icon museum. Read a bit on the internet before you go because a lot of the info is only in russian. Have fun!
