This attraction was the highlight of my trip to St Petersburg. The architecture and artifacts inside it are so intricately made and detailed, and the interior design, everything from the ceiling to the floor is spectacular to look at and is so beautiful. If you are ever visiting St. Petersburg then you just have to visit the Winter Palace, it is a must go and you absolutely will not regret visiting it.

An impressive palace in the center of St. Petersburg. This is a key element of the Hermitage building complex.
It attracts attention with the smallest details, including the famous gate with eagles, which are captured in the film about the capture of the winter palace.
A must to visit!

...this is first what comes to mind.
A splendid lavish palace the city founder Peter the Great built as his winter residence.
It sits on the central Palace Square just by the Neva river shining in its green/white/gold colors.
Today it houses the world class Hermitage museum, in fact only a part of it, and it's a sight not to be missed when visiting.

This is a "must do" when you are in Saint Petersburg! Thr winter palace makes your memory go back in time when the Czars used to be on russian power.
It's absolutely amazing just to be there. Plus, this is a place where you always see wonderful russian artists performing by the streets around the palace!
Lifetime experience!

Spent many hours touring this wonderful palace. Visited on a Sunday. It was very busy but there were people stationed throughout the building to explain certain rooms and artifacts located in them. Of note were school aged children, probably 8-12, with teachers and guides showing and teaching them the history of their city. All were well behaved and attentive. It was a plus to an already wonderful day of learning the history of a terrific city.

An iconic beautiful building - the Hermitage(s) are the extension to the original Palace; the family rooms of the Romanov family are a small part of the Palace; there are a number of reception rooms and public areas - this space holds a variety of family and historic objects that are separate to the object d'art that were collected by the various Monarchs.

This Palace is one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings around the world. I think you need a guide to visit it since it's not near the city. Perhaps you may rent a car or go with public transport. We went with a private guide. It is important to have some expert to teach you or instruct you in order to understand the main historical items, in this way, you may feel more impressed by the history of Peter I and of course visiting such a great place as this Palace makes more sense. You see real works of art and lovely rooms. You learn a lot about a magnificent part of the history of this great nation..

Another fabulous building in St.Petersburg, connected to the Hermitage. We visited as part of a 2 day cruise ship excursion, so we got in with minimal delay and did not have any ticketing issues. Lots of expensive art objects, collected before the Russian revolution. Well worth the visit.

Has anyone visited this palace free and easy without joining tours? How much is the entrance fee for this?

Hi. Better late than never. If you can afford a guide, then have one. I visited the place without a guide and I think I missed a lot.

I am in the process of planning a trip and am wondering how much time people spent in the Winter Palace?

Sorry for the delay in answering your question. The answer is do you wish to get an idea of the history of the place or if you are a history etc buff who delves into every detail of the past. You could spend a day or a week in St. Petersburg alone and barely scratch the surface. Similarly the same can be said of any of their bigger attractions of which The Hermitage is possibly the most varied regarding works of art etc., and the cost of entry for a few days soon mounts up. The other point that has to be addressed is that the Russians are not keen to have individuals wandering their country as opposed to an organised group and I felt that , as tourism is fairly new to them, they are inexperienced in dealing with what we in the west would term an ideal situation for making a few bob , so be prepared for a level of stand offishness when they are dealing with tourists. This may relax in time but it is there.
Getting back to the Hermitage the crowds and noise can be substantial and everyone wants to take photos.
