Playground is closed in winter
Feb 2020 • Family
We went to play with the kids but unfortunately the playground was closed. Also, they were renovating a lot around the square. For the rest it looked nice, there was ice skating but it was too cold.

Nice and varied
Jan 2020 • Couples
New Holland Island is well worth a visit. We visited the markets that was going on in early January and also ate at one of the nice restaurants there.
A work in progress but already nice and even toilet buildings are made nice

Brilliant place to spend a few hours
Sep 2019 • Family
After struggling a little to find our way in, we eventually found the footbridge leading to this island. It’s a really beautiful space - everything is very stylish, from the great cafes and shops, delightful herb garden, green space with plenty of chairs and beanbags to relax in, and a wooden ark that is an amazing kids play area. The sun was shining and we spent several hours relaxing in this wonderful oasis in busy St Petersburg.... certainly one of the favourite places we visited on this trip.

A Few Tips About New Holland Island
Jun 2019
The buildings looked very similar to the ones in Amsterdam back in the 18th Century, thus the name of “New Holland” was given to this triangular island not far from the Neva River. Peter the Great used it as a naval port, but mostly for timber storage.

Eventually the Russian Navy took over the place. One of the larger buildings on the island, the Bottle House, was a former naval military prison. You can’t miss seeing it as the circular building is several stories high. Today, there are several restaurants that occupy the spaces.

Since 2010, New Holland Island has turned into a multi-use facility with popular restaurants, a school, a unique children’s playground and residential properties. Our tour guide from Peter’s Walk told us about New Holland being a place to visit. You can locate New Holland by going to Goggle Maps.

The playground has almost a life-size framework of Dutch galleon. It is supposed to be for children, but I think adults would fine it fun to go inside too. A large pond is nearby with “floating plastic lilies.” I think in winter it may be used for a skating rink.

We did visit New Holland Island one early morning on our last day in St. Petersburg. There were a number of security guards and we felt more than safe. I think we would patronize several of these unique restaurants in another visit.

Nice park to chill out or go with kids
Aug 2019 • Family
There is a big timber ship as playground for the kids. Meanwhile parents can chill-out in public chairs around the garden.

Oasis in the city
Jul 2019 • Family
Great park to escape to with kids, nice change of pace from sightseeing.

The park has a variety of chairs on the grass so you can sit back and relax whilst the kids play. If you can, take a blanket and lunch for a picnic lunch. Perfect on s sunny day.

There is an expensive but great cafe offering excellent coffee!

If you are in the area, it is a great place to grab food
Jul 2019 • Couples
It is about a 25 minute walk from the Peter the Great monument. It is being wonderfully restored and there are a range of food outlets. We ate in a restaurant which served Georgian food. We looked at the food around us and it all looked great. We ordered off the ENglish translation menu and enjoyed the food immensely. The waitresses were really friedly and helped us in explaining the menu. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Apart from eating and chilling on the grass in the sun there is not much else to do. If you are in the area pop in for food, otherwise not much else to do. In a couple of years when the restoration is complete this could be a cracking place to visit. At the moment it is still in development.

A nice island on works
Oct 2018 • Solo
New Holland Island is an island, which is on works, when we visited St. Petersburg (October-2018). In fact, here in the near future there will be a lot of modern buildings related with entertainment, so it will be a very good place in the future. When we came to the city, it was full of machines to built some buildings, so we have to return. Now, on works, after it will be a very good place.

Take a nice break from all the walking
Jul 2019
After you are done walking around the gorgeous must-visit landmarks of Saint Petersburg, take a break and spend a few hours on New Holland island. It is located a short walk away from St Isaac’s Cathedral. It will welcome you with a spacious lawn with a lot of chairs to relax in, benches, a unique children’s playground and plenty of restaurants and cafes.
