The birthplace of Russia most beautiful city
Apr 2021
Peter and Paul fortress is set on a tiny Hare island on the Neva river. It is the birthplace of the Imperial capital, as the city founder Peter the Great built a star shaped fortress here in 1703 from where the city started to grow.
The primary purpose of the fortress was protection against the Suedes, but actually never served for that. Instead, it was a political prison.
Today, it's main attraction is the same name Cathedral where the Royal Romanov family is buried including Peter the Great himself, as well the famous Catherine the Great.
Apart from that, there are several museums across the island which you can visit according to your liking.

Peter & Paul Cathedral, part of the Fortress built by Peter the Great, founder of St Petersburg, is the burial place of the Czars including the last Czar Nicholas II & his family. We visited the Fortress as part of our 2 day Alla Tour. Very interesting history.

Fortress
Mar 2020
This is an absolute must see place to visit in Saint Petersburg. Easy to find and it will take at least 2 hours to visit the area. Peter the Great's tomb is here and the grounds are beautiful. It is about a 10 minute walk from the nearest metro station.

The Nucleus of the City!
Aug 2019 • Friends
The creation of the city of Saint Petersburg was a daring feat. This fortress is located on an island which was the nucleus of the future city. It was designed as a closed rampart consisting of bastions and curtains. The main building within the fortress is the Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral, the imperial burial-vault.
The Peter and Paul Fortress is a must-see in Saint Petersburg.

Big and Beautiful!!
Aug 2019
Peter and Paul fortress is a very big campus encompassing a church with bell tower and lots and lots of museum of different categories. There are different passes available and we chose for the one which covers everything. However, as like other museums in Russia, you need a lot of time to visit it completely. The church is beautiful and has a gigantic bell tower. You need to climb a lot of stairs (and huffing and puffing) to reach to the bell. Museums are beautiful especially the science museum, space museum and the old jail.

Amazing place to visit in St. Petersburg
Jul 2019
The Peter and Paul Fortress, the oldest architectural monument in St. Petersburg, embodies the rich history of the city located on the Neva. This historic stronghold, the foundation of which became an impulse to found a new city, was for the Northern Capital a place of gathering important offices. On its territory in various years were: the Senate, the Main Treasury, the Mint, the Secret Chancellery, as well as the buildings of the main state prison for political prisoners. The majestic Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul was established here, which is the burial place of representatives of the Romanov dynasty. Currently, this majestic stronghold, which has long acquired museum status, attracts tourists with the abundance of its exhibitions .

Snowfall adds to Beauty
Nov 2019
Yes, I visited in Nov 2019 and it was a cold morning and was snowing. When we reached there, it was already covered in a thin layer of fluffy snow giving a whitish cover all around. It smelled fresh and looked beautiful.

Fairly boring
Feb 2020 • Family
This was probably the least favourite place we visited whilst in st Petersburg. Maybe we expected too much. The consolidated pass is 750 per adult, which covers 7 exhibitions. There are a lot more exhibitions but they aren't included in the pass.

Quite a distance
Feb 2020 • Couples
Interesting fortress that - unfortunately- remained rather unimpressive. We spent some time walking around, enjoying the views and the architecture. However, considering the distance from the city center, it turned out only medium worthwhile for us.
