Since I do not read Russian, I had a disadvantage because not all signs are in English. But I found it so interesting to learn so much about all religions, ethnisities in the huge Sovietunion by just walking around and be able to read the English signs and admiring all the beautiful outfits, see the different Tools, Furniture etc. There... Having written the title, I'd say this museum is not the thing you really shoud see on your first to St. Petersburg, but having visited different parts of Russia and knowing about at least some its different ethnicities, you will appreciate it. The exhibition is vast, very informative and interesting. There are regular guided tours for those who want to... More

In the group of museums located around the Arts Square in the Historic Heart of St Petersburg, here in Inzhenernaya Str. we chose this one to be our first we came in. We were just amazed at first sight by its size and richness of its content. This museum of ethnography shows to the visitors whole diversity of traditional crafts,... More

In truth we went here because the Russian museum was closed on that day and it fitted in with the route we had planned. If you are into carpets and textiles (like my wife) then this is quite interesting. The display of caucus carpets and textiles was interesting particularly Armenian section. The building is impressive, no queues and entrance fees... More

An excellent museum full of the culture and costumes of the multitude of different ethnicities encompassed by the Russian landmass. The left gallery is not well signed in English, though you can easily get the gist through its diorama approach to displays, but the right side gallery is very well signed in English. I spent a highly enjoyable 3 hours... More

St. Petersburg has many museum choices and I would rate the Russian Museum of Ethnography as one of the better ones.

A fantastic museum covering dress and textiles across the Russian peoples. Quality is first rate, though it would be great if there were more technical details, in Russian or for me, in English. I spent a very happy 3 hours there!

The Russian Museum of Ethnography is right in the middle of St. Petersburg, a short walk off Nevsky Prospekt. Two floors full of displays of beautiful folk art and crafts and costume. There were several craftsmen there doing demonstrations---weaving, woodcarving, one man was even making wooden whistles. The coolest part is that kids were encouraged by the artisans to sit... More

We put this on the list because my sister teaches geography. It's a really beautiful building, and interesting museum. Compared to the massive scale of other museums in the area, it was small, and we saw the entire collection in about an hour and a half. The staff was very kind to us, and seemed pleased to have visitors. The... More

My son and I went to this museum on a Sunday. The museum houses vast collections of artifacts from the different groups that make up the country - the variety is impressive. The building itself – built as an extension of the Russian Museum in 1905-1915, had some nicer spaces and others that were more plain or worn. Moderately good... More
