About
Modern Passage is an architectural monument and modern shopping center. Passage is a real covered street same as Mikhailovskay st. The main Passage gallery connects Italianskaya st. and Nevsky prospect. When Passage opened its doors to customers for the first time in May, 1848, the shopping center was one of the first of its kind in Russia. The complex was comprised of three-storey galleries with an enclosed promenade through the center under a glass roof. Among Passage visitors were Dostoevsky, Shalyapin, Ostrovsky, Galina Vishnevskaya, Maya Plisetskaya and many other writers, actors, painters, scientists and sportsmen.

Stop in for the Exclusive Amber Collection store
Dec 2018 • Solo
The mall is small and there are many kiosks in the middle. I went here to buy cuff links for my husband at the Exclusive Amber Collection store. They have a decent selection, one of the few places that had more than one pair of cuff links. I also purchased at Tengin (kiosk), a pin for myself. I saw another review that said it's fake but I cannot verify that. I would say at either location, go with your gut. I had some concerns the Tengin might be fake, but I liked the pin and it wasn't too expensive. I did not have any concerns about the amber at Exclusive Amber.

Fake Russian Amber
Oct 2018 • Family
I bought 3 bracelets and a necklace at Tengin shop in the passage. It's one of the shops in the middle of the aisle. Turns out that all of them are fake, it's some sort of plastic. Watch out!

Cool building but not much to offer
Aug 2018 • Couples
We were looking to kill an hour or so shopping during a hot summer day. I saw that this is one of the first covered street malls and was interested to visit. The entrance is conveniently located on Nevsky Prospect and the building is truly beautiful. Unfortunately the stores inside were not too special and they were mostly empty. We ended up giving them a quick glance and moving on.

Shopping centre with no toilets
Feb 2018 • Solo
Passage is a spot on Nevsky Prospekt, an historical building- gallery and a shopping centre. It was built between 1846-1848 and is a stunning arcade with a glass roof which gives you the impression of air and light. The name came from French “passage”. You can escape Nevsky Prospekt, go through the gallery to the street Italyanskaya, where Ploshad Iskusstv and Russian Museum are just around the corner.
There are expensive shops and boutiques in Passage. Not many customers but a lot of security guards.
The shops don’t look welcoming. But when you find out that in this big pretentious place the toilets for customers are closed you really will feel not welcome.
Why? I have been told that the gallery is partly being refurbished. When I asked about the toilets none of the customer assistants or security guards paid me any attention nor were they helpful with advice on where the nearest toilets are. One of the shop assistant said that the toilets are only for staff, and then turned around absolutely not interested in me.
Therefore, it is a fascinating arcade to see, but the customer service is lamentable.

I really enjoyed walking this shopping arcade as I have a certain affinity for this types of shopping centre, it is really well maintained and exquisitely decorated, with music and great facades. You will enjoy it.

nice arcade a little difficult to find
Apr 2017 • Family
This arcade has a nice architecture (like you have some in Brussels). No idea of the shops ... just looking at the nice light and steelwork.

Worth a visit for the architecture, perhaps not the shopping
Jan 2017
This arcade is definitely worth a visit for the architecture - very late 1800's, gorgeous! The shopping, not so much - mostly quite touristy. There was however one excellent fur shop, where my husband bought an astrakhan hat with which he was thrilled! But as I said, worth popping your head in for the architecture, particularly in the winter as it is very pretty.

Good fur shop - no 21
Nov 2016 • Friends
Found a good shop for fur coats in this little mall. Number 21. Reasonable pricing and staff speak enough English to help you! Didn't end up buying on this trip but will definitely go back next time.

Fabulous shopping - If you can find the place!
Aug 2016 • Couples
This shopping arcade is well hidden and if you can't read Russian, good luck finding it. Have your hotel mark it on your map - between the Grand Palace and the next large street. Look in every shop door till you see steps going up and a large marble floor with shops on either side. Many Russian artists, top quality goods - no stupid nesting dolls! The second jewelry shop on the right side as you enter has work by Vladimir Mikelov (sp?) - incredibly detailed work with a Russian Orthodox theme. They won't take credit cards, but the prices are not that high. There are some great craft stores and clothing stores, and a large perfume store. Fun way to spend an afternoon. Little to no English spoken. There were two art galleries that were closed, but the art was beautiful through the shop windows.
