I would recommend getting a guided tour of the Soviet artists' collection as well as of the icons. The Western European art is not so well represented. But the first two collections are definitely worth a couple of hours being spend on those!

The overall condition of the Stalin-era building and the service style feels archaic, but one might think of it as a touch of Soviet exotica. Most of the permanent collection of oil paintings glosses over Russian and European art of the 18th and 19th centuries. Really unless you are hiding from the cold or have hours to kill then give this place a miss. The Russian stuff never captured my imagination for a minute. The modern stuff only marginally. Some of the photograph exhibits were better quality.

Nothing special in itself; however, very interesting "guest" exhibitions are held regularly.

Plenty to see and a good collection of Russian art of many periods. The modern art is as missable as any where else, but there's plenty to see for a couple of hours.
