Part of a larger complex, the main building is devoted to a history of Celadon Pottery, a specialty of the area for over a millennia. If you love pottery, you'll love the museum. Also contains exhibits on lacquer ware and other crafts as well. Free to visit!

The museum includes works in lacquer and other materials but the ceramic display is what makes this museum so memorable. The displays are of a very high standard with excellent explanatory labels in both English and Chinese.

Chinese provinces compete with each other to create the best museum experience, with Shaanxi arguably out front. Zhejiang is in there slugging, however, with its four-level facility on The West Lake Cultural Square (the original site near West Lake is CLOSED, don't be confused like I was originally). I've been to more than 20 provincial museums over the years and... More

It's small and most impressive exhibition of its collections are lacquer wares donated by a couple. The art gallery next doors exhibites quite a few Chinese ink and brush paintings by a famous latter-day painter, Jiang Binhong.

Be sure you explore to the left building and to the right building. Althought the pottery is fascinating, the library and paintings were the real treasures there for me.

We have visited the Zhejiang Provincial Museum at Gushan and there was another branch at Wulin Square. The displays were concentrating on pottery and lacquareward particularly between Ming to Quing Dynasty. It was a 3-storey building with nice displays on individual floors while the entry to this museum was free. Recommend to have a look at the pottery displays in... More

Visited the West Lake Cultural Square branch of this museum yesterday. Wander through the halls to see ancient relics - the traditions of ceramics, lacquered items, clothing and textiles and tea production. These go back many, many centuries. Even today Zhejiang has a thriving textile, ceramics, clothing and tea growing. As you drive from Hangzhou to Wuzhen the factories proudly... More

The Zhejiang Provincial Museum is on Gushan Island in West Lake, Hangzhou. It is a first class museum in a modern building, and the exhibits are skillfully displayed and artfully lit. The museum's main focus is on pottery and ceramics to tell the story of more than 11,000 years of human history in this region. Some of the earlier piece... More

Hangzhou was the capital of Wuyue of the Five Kingdoms Era in the 10th century. After the Jurchen Jin conquest of North China in 1127 which ended the Northern Song Dynasty in Kaifeng, remnants of the royal family moved south and established their "temporary" capital in Hangzhou, which became an important cultural as well as political center. The museum displays... More
