The one in Sapporo is considered a larger one approximately 520m, stretching from Sapporo Station to Odori Station on Subway Namboku Line. Both stays for us in Sapporo are close to it so we use quite often. There are throngs of people moving through the place daily, including tourists like us. Reckon it would be a great place against inclement weather (rain/winter) while at same time can enjoy both shopping & dining; plenty of Shops, restaurants & more. Noted there are some recess area whereby Events activities are setup along the long walkway, definitely a great way for exhibition or promotion. We have seen children art drawing, weekend local veg sales and even Sports promotion over our past trips here. There are tables and chairs for one to relax, and there is also a free Wi-Fi service. I saw on documentary there had even placed a piano for passerby to play Impromptu too!. We especially like to explore from Akrenga Terrace onwards, going down to get bf at either Pronto or Mac. Noted that the walkway connect to Pole Town and continues all the way Susukino subway station. The Aurora Town branches off to the east leads to the TV Tower and clock tower. Sure fun for exploring. A must-visit, do include inside your itinerary in your next trip here at Sapporo. When it rains or weather too hot/cold, this underground is just wonderful!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- doctorfoxtrotTaguig City, Philippines13,153 contributionsRespite From the Chilly WeatherThe underground maze of several walkways going back and forth seem to stretch several kilometers. The weather is indeed chilly during winter , and staying at the Sapporo Grand Hotel , we would later discover this pathway underneath at the basement which has a plethora of shops , restaurants and fast food outlets. Several toilets along the way can be seen. But take note most are closing by 9 pm so we can be wary of that .Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2023

Here, there are cafes and restaurants, shops and toilets - and a delightful calm, even when there are many people. We ended up having both breakfast and lunch at two of the restaurants, and it simply doesn't get more authentic Japanese than this. One of Sapporo's major attractions!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2024

The underground connects areas like Sapporo Station and Odori Park and we were surprised how far some of the passageways reached out. We had a few convenient entrances near our hotel and once we figured it out we did not have to go outside to go to/from the main train station - We wish we knew this earlier!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2024

amazing underground link in central Sapporo. You could walk for hours as you can get everything you need. Life saver during the cold and snowy winter period.
One of the reason there are hardly any souls above ground and can get a bit crowded during peak periods.

Visited with family.
Pros:
1) We visited in October, which was start of winter so weather can be a bit chilly and walking underground can keep you warm.
2) A lot of shopping and restaurants close to each other, so its definitely not a boring walk.
3) It was quite a long walk from Pole Town to Sapporo station but definitely worth it. Did it twice.
4) Having Ishiya Cafe underground was a treat and Montebell for your outdoor needs.
5) Toilet, as usual, is not a problem.
6) The station was huge and clean.
7) Can save you a lot of train fees if you choose to walk plus its good exercise!
Japan is known for its friendly underground shopping. Definitely a must-visit in Sapporo!

A huge underground mall. Plenty of shops and places to eat. It can be somewhat confusing if you are not paying attention. It would be nice if there was some seating in the public areas. You can go from the JR station to Susukino and never see the outside.

When I visited Sapporo in early January, it started snowing heavily while I was moving around with my suitcase. I went through this underground mall to get to my destination.
Depending on your destination, you may need to take a detour, but it was better to take the detour underground than to endure the snow and cold.

This underground is abundant with shopping and eateries. There are also banks and ATMs. It goes on and on in all directions. Never been in one so big. Enter multiple subway stations and multiple street exits. Was minus and freezing above so was great to stay warm and it was so warm it was jackets off! Now I am added to the many that have appreaciated and explored it. Definitely a must to walk through and explore.

It is a popular walking spot for Sapporo residents in the winter. It is warm and easy to walk, and it is the best. It is about 2 km from Sapporo Station to Susukino, across Odori, and there are cafes, events, and merchandise wagons along the way, so you will never get bored. It is a spot you definitely want to stop by. It is directly connected to each department store and building on the ground, so you can enjoy walking.

I visited Sapporo in Winter and spent a bit of time in the underground malls. This one was huge, seemed like you could walk for miles or kilometers. There are many access and exits points here to include entering and exiting department stores. There are several restaurants and shops down here. You could spend all day here. For a high trafficked area, it was pretty clean.

Hi I'd like to buy some winter shoes for hiking in sapporo, which I can also use in my home country after (tropical country). Would you know any good shops that sell such shoes? Or maybe a Merrell store in Sapporo?

Hi you mentioned your hotel had a direct acces to the pedestrian walkway. May I please know which hotel you stayed in and if you were happy with the hotel. Thanks

Hi, this is just the underground area that links the subways and shops - its like a long arcade under the open air street. It protects you from the wind and snow and there are many shops, mini markets, stalls, information booths. If you still can;t find it, go to the Daimaru dept store and take the lift to the lowest level, I think its level B for basement, walk through the food hall which exits to the underground pedestrian area. Enjoy!
