If you want Ramen in Sapporo, this is the place to go. There are several ramen restaurants all in one place in the commercial center of the city. You can choose any ramen that you want here.

Almost every ramen shop has a lineup down this alley and the whole area smells delicious. All the ramen shops are small and I don't think you can go wrong in this area but there are definitely some favourites with all kinds of accolades including TripAdvisor recommendations, Michelin recommendations and even a shop that Anthony Bourdain visited.

When we visited the one we had picked out to try before we came to Sapporo had closed off their queue to accept their last customers of the night so we tried a style we hadn't had before which was served with dried shrimp and was pretty good. The area is surrounded with activities to do including some fun looking bars nearby. Make sure to bring cash as some locations only accept cash.

The alley was about 5 mins on foot from Susukino station. It was sad to see many restaurants closed, possibly because of the COVID-19 impact. The place, and particularly the shop that we walked in, however, was a great place to discover and taste Sapporo-styled ramen at reasonable price.

I visited in early April 2023 on a Sunday night. To my surprise, only around 40% of the place were opened. It was a disappointment looking at the empty place. Not sure it’s because of Sunday night or not. We thought there was a new ramen street but couldn’t find it so we went back to one of the places still open. The owner was friendly, ramen was average. If the place is not that empty, I think it would be a much better experience.

Most of the shops are closed so we went into this particular shop as it was empty. There were 6 of us so we occupied all the seats. As the chef start serving the ramen, I stood up to take a photo of the shop and the ramen. The chef immediately told me to stop and shouted “NO!”, I said sorry and sat down. To my surprise, he started to throw his temper and banged his pan and wok very loudly behind the counter, THROUGHOUT our dining in the shop. It is very awkward and uncomfortable so we decided to leave without finishing our meal. Such a shame and disappointment. I have been traveling to different parts of Japan every year, this has to be the worst experience I ever had, in Sapporo sadly.

We went there mainly because of the craze all over social media. We walked all the way to the end of the alley and we decided to walk back to the first stall and try. The first stall was a Chinese style sapporo ramen 🍜. It was manned by a Japanese man who in my opinion was quite unhappy when we enter. It was around 8pm when we stepped in. I give him the benefit of doubt that maybe he’s just tired. Throughout the whole experience, he was rather rude to not only us but the rest of the patrons as well. Anywho, he was kind of ‘in a rush’ to pack up and he turned down the next gentleman who walked into the store, citing they were close for the day. The very next instance, 2 young ladies walked in and he allowed them to be serve. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Come on! This is is unprofessional. With this kind of service attitude, I am astounded and disappointed. Not going visit again. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Ramen are Japanese noodles, usually thin but not too thin and not as thick as udon. The noodles are served in a soup. The recipe for the soup is a secret known only to the chef. Ramen are not too expensive. There are about a dozen ramen shops in the street, have a look around and decide which looks is best

Ganso(original) Ramen Yokocho is the famous original "ramen alley" in Susukino, Sapporo. The alleyway is narrow and contains about a dozen or so ramen shops that you can visit and eat your ramen. You will find a ramen with a flavorful deep broth that has been boiled for a day or more consisting of chicken or pork bones or a combination of both, or a dashi broth made from katsuoboshi (dried, smoked tuna flakes), kombu(dried kelp), and dried sardines and other ingredients including miso(bean paste), shio(salt) and shoyu(soy sauce), and various toppings. what you'll find is that no matter what you order, you'll probably like it.
