We went here after missing Nijo castles last admission. It’s quite and tranquil. Nice get away from the tourist and a place to rest.

We have visited Shinsenen by early April after viewing Nijo in the vicinity. The temple cum shrine/garden though smaller in size were nice and comprehensive. Many local people come to worship while others would come to take photos on the beautiful environment.

In all the years I've been visiting Kyoto I've been remiss in not taking time or the effort to visit this little ancient time capsule from the original Heian Kyoto. Its so near to Nijojo that there really is no excuse not to visit and...More

This is a great garden/temple/shrine to visit if you are short on time and will be visiting Nijo. It is about a 5-10 minute walk away from Nijo, and open all times of the day. Best of all, it is admission free for those on...More

We tried to visit the Nijo Castle but it had just closed by the time we got there, so we went for a walk around the surround streets and stumbled upon this tranquil little spot. We spotted the red bridge from the road and spent...More

This shrine is not famous at all. I found this in a guide book as a hole-in-the-wall spot. The property is very small and nothing fancy but it gives tranquil, zen atmosphere right next to the busy street. I sat on the bench and stared...More

There are so many shrines in Kyoto it is difficult to choose which ones to visit. This shrine is a short walk from Nijo Castle. The gardens are very pretty and peaceful. What I truly enjoyed about this shrine was its beauty and lack of...More

Lovely spot to walk through and just look around. Very scenic and beautiful. The bridge over the pond is the highlight, and there are little shrine areas too.

To me this is what one sees in their minds eye when they picture a Japanese garden and temple. This place was "Zen" and truly relaxing-there were no other tourists around-there is a pretty red bridge over which you can walk to see the large...More

After the crowds at the nearby Nijo Castle, it was refreshing to take a short walk here and enjoy a small, well kept temple that was not teeming with tourists. If you are already at the Nijo Castle you are missing out if you don't...More
