We enjoy bike riding and had reviewed this bike company's website to hire bikes for 1 - 2 days whilst in Kyoto. In the end we hired a bike for a day to see the following temples; Kinkakuju, Ryoanji,Ninnaji ( don't miss this lovely temple- no crowds ), Myonshinji, then over to Arashiyama to the Bamboo Path, Tenryuji Temple and... We rented bikes for 3 days. All went smooth. Bikes were comfortable. We purchased the bike map which was really helpful. There is lots of bikers in Kyoto so it felt safe. The only downside was you had to pay to return your bike to another one of their city locations. We discovered a KCTP close to our hotel but... More

We purchased a map for 100 yen and directed ourselves. It was easy to get around. The bikes all worked well and childrens helmets are free. The baskets handy for your bags. I did not see any adults wearing helmets. Would suggest wearing gloves as it is cool in Jan. Bikes had lights. Cycle by the river dedicated walking and... More

We did a morning Kinkaku Arashiyama Golden tour with Hiro and really enjoyed. The sites were really busy due to Autumn season but Hiro really did his best to not let the crowds get in the way of our tour. Mostly flat riding and some hills in and out of bamboo forest. It wasn't cheap as it was only two... More

We rode with a private tour guide and she was fantastic! She answered all our questions and it was very informative and fun! The ride was mostly flat with some hills, but overall easy. We did the back street tour.

Just finished the western tour with Naoko. Our guide was knowledgeable and very friendly and accommodating. It was expensive but definitely worth it. Would recommend as a great way to see the sights and also get some exercise which was needed after a week of gluttonous eating in Japan.

We were looking at this place initially for a tour, and we sort of left it to the day of to decide whether to do a tour or just rent bikes. As it went, we didn't get to the station/rental place til after noon, so we just rented bikes for the afternoon and used our phone to GPS us around... More

We had only 2 days in Kyoto and decided to spend part of this time on the KINKAKU ARASHIYAMA GOLDEN TOUR. We weren't disappointed. We booked very last minute and they were able to arrange a tour for just the 2 of us. Keiko was a wonderful guide. She was very caring and knowledgeable- she knew the best spots to... More

We spent the day cycling the western sites (Golden Temple, Nijojo Castle, Bamboo forest, etc). We found the cycling to be the best way to see these sites as they are not within walking distance of one another. If you don't bike, you would have to do it by taxi or by tour bus. Our guide was very knowledgeable and... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
