I love netsuke, so I found about this little museum knowing beforehand what to search for, as it is not a popular turist spot that you can easily find on lists of Kyoto attractions. The collection is impressive, and even you're not interested in netsuke, the house itself is a treasure. The old kitchen has seats and hot tea ready... More

Located inside one of the few remaining samurai villas in Kyoto, the netsuke museum is an exquisite museum devoted to Japan's delightful miniature worn sculptures called netsuke. Stunning displays allow you to get lost in the playful miniatures that are replete with visual jokes. The museum focuses on the vibrant contemporary scene. We were lucky to run into the featured... A small museum packed full of netsuke figurines that is definitely worth a visit. The venue is wonderful - it's an old samurai home - and very picturesque. A warning though, it's tucked within a residential area and a bit off the beaten track. The cab driver had to ask for directions. Nevertheless it's an eye opener to this ancient... More

This museum contains the most stunning exquisite collection of netsuke, although it is rather difficult to find. A very kind local man guided me there. I have to admit that i never fully understood what netsuke really are until i saw some sometime ago, on the popular English TV show "Antique Roadshow". The collection is very diverse and ranges from... More

I thoroughly recommend going to this museum especially if you want to avoid the crowds of tourists that over run kyoto. i only found out about this museum by looking at a city map and because i love netsuke it peaked my interest. The museum is located in what appeared to be a mainly residential area so don't expect to... More

Delightful little museum for exploring the exquisite Japanese craftsmanship of netsuke figures. All well presented in an old samurai house that is also worth seeing.

Having just read " The hare with amber eyes" ( P.S. Great read ) - this was a must see. Just a short walk down from the street from where we were staying at the Plastic Smile Hotel, it juxtaposed the modern Japanese plastic of the hotel with the ancient wood of old. Set down a quiet side side street,... More

A pleasant place to visit but not the easiest place to find. Set in a retored 19th C house most of the collection is of contemporary netsuke made by living artists however the back room upstairs does ncontain some Meiji and Edo period examples but that is where the place is let down. These older netsuke, unlike the newer stuff,... More
