Our tour with Samurai Joe was one of our best days touring in Japan. We walked for 6 hours and my kids (5,7) were entertained and happy through the tour. He was engaging and endearing and showed us parts of Kyoto that we wouldn't have seen or known about. The kids loved his Samurai show and my son enjoyed being... More

We joined this tour expecting it to be fairly informative and entertaining, and it did not disappoint! Samurai Joe was both very knowledgeable with his wealth of experience in the area and entertaining with his funny jokes and his very impressive sword work. And at 88 years old he's an inspiration to be still doing a job which he loves!... More

Samurai Joe is indeed a treasure! Due to time constraints we did not have lunch incorporated into our semi-private tour (on a weekday), but despite this, our family of 6 and another group that were with us (judging by the laughs we had) had really enjoyed the tour. We were lucky that the weather was nice and sunny too. The... More

We joined a group of about 20 others to listen and follow Samurai Joe around Kyoto for five wonderful hours. Joe who is 87 brings to these tours a sense of the city and its history without being too heavy on facts and figures. There is a sense fun and light heartedness which made the time pass quickly. While we... More

The tour with samurai Joe was really great. We visited a lot of great shops and places and even had a nice meal together. Joe is such a nice and funny person, the whole group had a lot of fun. If you visit Kyoto and maybe have a hard time connecting to locals (because of language barrier) this tour is... More

Samurai Joe is talented, charming, funny and at 87, fitter than most people half his age. The tour was great value with plenty of free tastings and access to traditional shops and sights we wouldn't have known about. Samurai Joe is generous with his personal stories and everyone on the tour was delighted with the experience. We were lucky to... More

The tour with samurai-Joe was my daughters favorite tour of all the tours we took in our 3 weeks in Japan. This is mostly on account of Joe special character and sense of humor. We learned a lot of little details we may have not notices while walking on a street. Like why shops have curtains, how to spot a... More

I had read about this tour in Sydney newspaper so I had some idea of what to expect but the tour was longer and covered more ground than I anticipated. All the local shops near City Hall were lovely and there was absolute no pressure to buy anything but some of us did. The snacks along the way and sushi... More

The walking tour with samurai Joe was the highlight of our stay in Kyoto. 87 years old but still sprightly and feisty we got a locals viewpoint of fantastic Kyoto. Lots of shops ( perhaps a couple too many), a samurai sword demonstration, a walk around the palace gardens and lunch in a local arcade made this tour great value.... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
