I was utterly blown away by the show - it was much more emotional than I expected, it truly is theatre as well as a martial arts show - and I also really enjoyed my 1hr lesson. The lesson is a fun relaxed experience which doesn't require much fitness, but I found it quite insightful - I learned how expressive... More

We visited here in May, I have always been interested in Samurai swords so I thought this would be a fun way to get some hands on experience. The teacher was excellent and we had a small class of 4 for the first half then just the 2 of us for the second. We got to enjoy learning how to... More

The class and show was recommended by a friend in Los Angeles, who claimed that he was more proud of his samurai certificate than his engineering degree. :-) We took his advice and loved every second! The show was a unique experience and nice to see the culture being kept alive. The class and dress (costume) made for a fun... More

The Samurai Kembu Theater first gives a show that describes the ways of the Samurai and very talented artists reenact traditional and contemporary Samurai performances. Then you are able to select your Samurai outfit and receive instructions on the ways of a Samurai. It was a highlight of our trip and something I will remember always! Thanks again Samurai Kembu... Fantastic experience. Our party of four had a great time learning about samurai history and then dressing up in beautiful costumes and practicing some moves. The staff were very helpful and attentive if we needed any help. A great experience which we shall always remember.

Make sure you do the full meal deal here! The performance is very impressive, the lessons a good work out and you will learn your first sword dance. Costumes are beautiful and absolutely add to the experience. A lot of fun.... and if you have young children that cannot be quiet in the performance, please consider a different activity.

My partener and I had a great time at Samurai Kembu. The show was excellent and was performed by a highly skilled group of people. Through the whole 2 hourse we learnt a bit of samurai history, which was quite fascinating. During the lesson we got to dress up and use the katana. It was an awesome experience. The instructors... This was a fantastic experience. I wanted to do something unique within the culture of Japan and came across this. The instructor was a great professional and a great teacher. He was very easy to follow and learn from. He was also very encouraging and allowed me to feel comfortable learning and performing. Definitely a great memory that I'll carry... More

I booked a show in advance for my group of friends what is actually necessary as there is not so much places in the audience. It is quite a cosy show with 3 people performing samurai dance. They are very skilled!!! and we really enjoyed sitting and watching the show, that lasts about an hour. The place is also very... More

Booked the whole pack with lesson and dressing-up and it was totally worth it. You get a little intro into Japanese and Samurai culture. The instructors are very nice and helpful and at the end you get to do a little show yourself. Great experience!

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
