Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

- Single Mum TravelsCanberra, Australia208 contributionsAmazing views of a beautiful cityWhat a great way to see a beautiful city on a snowy evening. The night we went it wasn't overly busy as we went early so we had no issues waiting for lifts. The staff we interacted with were lovely and informative. You can buy some souvenirs up the top as well as in the shop.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 February 2024
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,620 contributionsI can it see it everywhere! This was the very first attraction that I saw when I got out of the Kyoto Station. Located just accross from the station, you can’t miss it due to its height and orange color. There are shops, restaurants, offices, bus tops, grocery stores, etc near it. As I visited various attractions in Kyoto, I could see it from the distance, like a beacon calling my attention.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 April 2024
- akari-yamaChiba Prefecture, Japan61 contributionsIt was a beautiful view. It's a place I've always wanted to go to because you can see the cityscape of Kyoto. You can look through the telescope and explore various things. I was able to see Higashi Honganji, Toji, Nishi Honganji, and many other temples and shrines. It has a retro atmosphere and is popular with foreigners and school trip students, so it was very lively.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 May 2024
- LaurentT76Paris, France1,110 contributionsTo do!It took me until my fourth visit to get there but I think getting there at the beginning of my stay in Kyoto can help to understand the extent of things to visit. Privilege the fact of day, 30 minutes before sunset. Very powerful and free telescopes... the kids loved it!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 July 2024
- shinoharatakayukiTakaoka, Japan169 contributions"Nidec" Kyoto TowerIts official name is Nidek Kyoto Tower, not Kyoto Tower, but it seems to have become Nidek only recently, so it appears in internet searches as usual in Kyoto Tower, and it also appears on car navigation systems, so it may be good either way. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is the first place I can think of because it offers a panoramic view of the city of Kyoto, but I decided to visit it partly because I wanted to avoid walking outside due to the huge congestion caused by overtourism, which has a bad reputation, and partly because the day I visited was extremely hot and sweltering. Since this is a place where you can get a view, there's not a hint of Kyoto-like atmosphere by walking around the city, but it's satisfying enough for observational purposes only, as you can get 360 degree panoramas from the center of Kyoto and even see famous facilities and temples in various directions crowded with telescopes. However, the observation deck is not large enough and has a limited capacity, so I don't think you'd be forced to visit when it's crowded or there's a waiting time.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 August 2024
- mystic100268 contributionsBrilliant views and great valueThis hadn't been in our plans but we found ourselves at Kyoto station with 1.5hrs to spare and thought why not. Turned out to be a great decision. Not to busy and stunning views of Kyoto and in the distance Osaka. Loved watching the bullet trains going to and fro from the station. And all for about a 10th of the cost of going up either of the Tokyo towersVisited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 November 2024
- HannarmPuerto Vallarta, Mexico103 contributionsA visit just to fulfillNot that it is the best view, not the best place, not the best care, not the best food/drink. It's just to meet the Kyoto tower. We ordered snacks and drinks like martinis and Gin and tonic, they were fine. Very basic service, nothing special as Japanese service usually is. We went at night and the atmosphere was a little more effusive with large groups of adults already or shortly into the party and we went a second time for sunset and it was almost empty.Visited December 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 December 2024
- Irene R3 contributionsgood viewKyoto Tower offers breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains. The observation deck is modern and well-designed. It’s a great spot for sunset photos. - Princes of travelParis, France7,490 contributionsModern towerThe Kyoto Tower is right in front of the train station and is one of the city’s must-sees. The tower, built in 1964, is 131 metres high and welcomes visitors to the observation deck, 100 metres high. Admission costs ¥900 per person, and is accessed by lift in the shopping centre on which the tower stands. We went there at sunset, dusk to see Kyoto and the surrounding area at night. The weather being clear, we could see the buildings of Osaka and the metropolitan area, located about 50 km to the south. The binoculars located inside sound free which allows to see far enough. From above, the view of Kyoto is splendid and most of the city's points of interest can be distinguished. Allow 45 min.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2024

Really neat to see Kyoto from up high in a wonderful tower. The telescopes can be used to see all sorts of cool things. We also learned the largest lake in Japan, Lake Biwa, was a short car ride away.

It was extremely bad when we visited, and we spent most of our time queuing for lifts both when we arrived and when we left.
We visited when it was dark and there was a lot of reflection on the curved glass of the tower’s windows.
I can’t really recommend. Maybe we just visited at the wrong time.

Visitors from Kyoto Station coming to the city center will surely see or passby this tall and iconic landmark of the city!
From the 10th storey of Kyoto Station, which is an observatory, you can have quite a good view of the tower though there's a glass panel that may have side effect for photography. (But I had no problem with that)
The tower also served as a directional guide. We explored further away from the station as the sky was getting dark and were not too sure which direction to walk back to the station. But no panic. By looking for this tower and walking towards it, you will not lose your way. The tower is located opposite the station!
And by the time we reached the station, it was closed to 7pm then (the sky got dark by 5pm), we passed by the tower up front and nearer (than day time from the observatory), it was much nicer with the colourful lightings!

The first thing you see on the door is a sign that says you can’t look around. There’s no
View from the inside tables or really that good from the outside tables at night. Even with translator app both drinks did not come out as requested and no one tried to fix the situation. Very unattentive. Would def recommend one of the other rooftop bars in the city if you’re looking for the full experience. Who tf doesn’t have limes?
We asked to move to an outside seat and was told no, moments later; a table opened and another couple asked to move and was escorted.
The temperature was about 10000 degrees so if you want to sweat balls and not see anything this might be for you. Otherwise head to the food court and have some rectum cause it would likely be better.

I thought Kyoto Tower would be similar to Tsutenkaku Tower in Osaka, but I was completely wrong! The interior of Kyoto Tower is beautiful, and the view of the Kyoto cityscape from there is absolutely breathtaking! There's no better place to enjoy the view from an observation deck. When I visit Kyoto again, I'll definitely go back. I also enjoy visiting Ramen Street in Kyoto Station. I highly recommend checking it out!

I visited it on my own in March and on a tour in December. Apparently there are regulations in Kyoto regarding the height and color of buildings, as well as the hanging of laundry and futons. That's why this tower is the tallest in the city (131m) and looks down on everything around it. It looks like a candle, but it was built with the image of a lighthouse that illuminates the sea-less city of Kyoto. From the observation deck 100m above ground, you can get a 360-degree view of the ancient capital of Kyoto in all four seasons.

If you have a bit of time near Kyoto Station then this is worth an hour, but photography is limited because the only views are behind glass. Kyoto has better sights but on a clear day it is possible to pick out some of the temples you will have visited.
Very good food court in the basement, so definitely worth stopping on for lunch.

I don't recommend this hotel for men. The design of the toilets basin is awful. When a normal man sits on the basin the tip of the penis touches the base of the basin. Believe me you don't have to be extra-large. You will need to hold your penis with your hands outside the basin. Imagine the complications when you need to do 1 and 2.
Recommend the hotel changes all toilets. I was told all rooms have the same type.
Apart from that, good people and great location close to the train station.

Kyoto Tower is the iconic building in Kyoto and it's located in the heart of Kyoto City. The entrance fee is reasonable and you can have a good view of the places in Kyoto as well as take photographs. The tower is not as big as Tokyo Tower but for those going to Kyoto, then Kyoto Tower can also be ticked off as place to visit. Overall: 5 Stars

Hi all,
Anyone know if the Daiso inside Kyoto Tower is still open?
Written 4 December 2016
It's already closed. A shopping mall, Kyoto Avanti in Hotel Kyoto Grande which is located in South side of the Kyoto station has Daiso shop.
Written 5 December 2016
How do I get there using public transportation?
Written 9 February 2015
