Must see!

I really enjoyed the temple! Make sure you do the walk through "hell" to knock on the door to heaven, it's an experience for sure.

Zenko-Ji Temple is an inclusive Buddhist Temple located in Nagano city, Japan. I had the good fortune of visiting twice - once on my own and once with a combined tour where we also saw the snow monkeys. With both of these visits I was able to have two totally different experiences. If you're going to self tour - it's... More

Nice part of Nagano, totally worth it. Many students were around to pray before exams. Below the temple is dark (dark) tunnel, where one could find the door to paradise...

I purchased the bus day pass to get here and to explore the Sanada Clan's backyard Matsushiro just south of Nagano later in the day. If you are a hiker the road from Nagano Eki to this temple is 2 km and lined with interesting shops. Using the local bus it takes 5 mins. The bus I took had a... More

Great sightseeing spot with plenty to see and do. The scenery was incredible with the little shops and food stands . Beautiful temple, lovely gardens. Worth a visit.

This was in a small part of town and had lots of little shops in front of the temple. The tour guide we had was very knowledgeable and explained about the Buddhist significance of the temple. The best part was going under the Temple in the complete darkness to feel the ancient key. We were told that it is thought... More

Unexpectedly stranded in Nagano due to snow, visiting the Zenko-ji Temple seemed to be the only option for a day trip. Despite having to wear a therapy boot which made walking more cumbersome, I decided to try to find it on foot from my lodging beside the train station. Directions were easy to follow but the walk took about 45... More

This is a very famous temple. Has great views and has many buildings to look at. The street in front of the temples has lots of little shops selling everything from shichimi (Japanese 7 pepper spice) to plastic throwing stars! In February it has an illumination festival and is very pretty.

My mom and I ventured up the hill from the Metropolitan Hotel to this historic temple. We were fortunate to have clear blue skies and crisp mountain air on this beautiful walk approaching the temple. The monk drumming inside could be heard from the incense offering site out front. We also enjoyed walking around the back gardens. A must see!

Really enjoyed this temple. Make sure you do the underground passage and look for the key for salvation. Definitely something different and memorable.
