Central Market began life as a wet market in 1888, built by Yap Ah Loy, the city’s Chinese Kapitan. It served as a prominent landmark in colonial and modern-day Kuala Lumpur. When the wet market was relocated in the 1980s, the Malaysian Heritage Society successfully petitioned against the demolition of the building. Now, Central Market Kuala Lumpur is an iconic attraction and a delightful destination for tourists, shoppers and art lovers.

For a Western visitor, Central Market offers many of the things you'll find on the streets and sidewalks of Kuala Lumpur… at higher prices but without the hassle. Yes there's room for negotiation but it's not intimidating here. I found several nice decorative art objects...More

There are sections designated for Indian, Chinese, Malay products which could make it easier to find the products. It’s relatively clean with nice colored pattern tiles.

Always worth a visit to a market. No real bargains to be had but not hassled by stall owners. All the stuff you’d expect at a market, plus several high end shops including jewellers.

Come here for the historic value of the building and to atmosphere, but it's stocked with tourist trinkets that any seasoned traveler wouldnt bother buying.

I've been to the Central Market a few times and really enjoy browsing through the items. No one is pushy to sell you something like in most Asian markets. Nice food court upstairs as well to grab a quick meal or drink

There is nothing Malaysian in there except really bad tourist gifts. If you want something presentable go to their craft complex.

Thus market is not like your typical Asian market. 1. It is very clean and 2. It is very unique. Arts, crafts and vintage looking items are sold here so it is nice to have a browse.
