We went to the fish market two days in a row, it was clean, well presented. The fishermen were really friendly and happen to chat. For a local experience go up the stairs to the cafe at the top, local food at local prices. We were treated like royalty and the staff explained all the food to us and were smiling from ear to ear- thrilled that we were eating there and that they could present some of their local dishes

Best place to experience Maldives fish industry. You can see a huge collection of fishes in here. You can buy and get it cut and cleaned also in here. It’s amazing to see how skilled these people are to effectively cut and clean very large tuna fishes using only a one small knife. You must spend some time here on your visit to male.

Located across the road from the fishing boats, the fish market is full of fish of all sizes and various colors. Along the right hand side, fish is filleted expertly as you watch. It's a small market so plan about 15 minutes here.

It's probably a good idea to go as early as you can, because you want to see as much of the action to be able to really appreciate how fresh the fish really are. You can see the boats coming in from the different islands, to them offloading the fish, and seeing the fish being delivered to the nearby fish market. It was a unique experience because whilst it was very raw, I think we can truly appreciate how hard these fishmen work to get the fish to the market and then of course to see the traders do their business.

In living in the city, sometimes we get disconnected from the food that are served to us at the table or even from the supermarket so it was a wonderful experience to see how the fish are actually brought in.

Be warned - this place is filled with fish, fish stink, and puddles of fishy liquid. But it’s cool in an 18th century way. If you’ve never been to a fish market, you should have a look. You don’t need more than a few minutes here though...

I'm not a big fish eater. As we were on a walking tour of Male.

We went to the markets. Our guide explained the importance of fishing in Maldives.

It was getting late, so there was less fish about. Some of the waste was being thrown into the sea for the stingrays.

Worth a brief look.

Interesting and active fish center with different types of fish. They have a long table where they cut up and clean the fish for you. Be careful in flip flops cause a lot of bloody water on the ground. But interesting place to wander for 10 minutes.

This review is quite late. I booked the walking tour in Male City through UI Inn and Male Fish Market was among the places we visited. Compared to other fish markets I have been to, this one is quite small. At any rate, there was a local restaurant nearby where where no tourist can be seen. I think this is one of the best kept secrets of the city. I was able to sample Maldivian cuisine at bargain prices. Thanks to the guide who brought me here. I could have spent a fortune easily on one of the restaurants catering to tourists.
