Very shady and lovely spot. A good inexpensive place to visit! The Japanese gardens area is pretty with lots of lilly ponds. There's also a vegetable garden!

Austin arboretum is located in Zilker Park on Barton Springs Road. The gardens are nice enough but nothing especially impressive. The maintenance is about average for such facilities. Someone can expect to walk the trails and see the highlights within 90 minutes. The Japanese Garden...More

We spent a little more than an hour wandering around this space. It’s a nice outdoor space but I’m not really sure it should be considered a Botanical Garden. It felt more like a nature reserve with a few nicely plotted gardens. We found it...More

Apparently the work of one man of Japanese origins, the site has been carefully maintained by the City of Austin parks department, probably assisted by volunteers. Although situated between two main roads and traffic noise is considerable near one boundary, it is a tranquil environment...More

A bit Shabby. They had not planted a lot of the spring flower beds. Walkways were uneven and mortar cracked; not for folks who have trouble walking.

My guy and I just happened across this place and it was a fantastic discovery! It was great to get away from city life for a moment and inexpensive to boot!

The gardens are beautiful. It's mostly shaded so it was surprisingly cool when we went on a whim in August. Wear comfortable shoes, there are lots of steps and unpaved trails.

While there are no picnic tables, I doubt that anyone on staff will tell you to get out if they see you eating. Definitely no fires.
