The Apothecary served local customers, including the Washingtons and Robert E. Lee, between 1792 and 1933. The shop was transformed into a museum shortly after its closing and visitors can still view the original ingredients, products, and documents left behind by this 141-year-old family business.

Very interesting tour. The upstairs of the apothecary is just like it was. You can't touch anything but there's a lot to see.

A very unique museum! It offers you a look at the way a pharmacy was operated back in the days. A lot of jars and drawers with the original medicine are still intact. Sure, some renovation has been done to the house, however, a visitor...More

Interesting timepiece and look at 18th & 19th century pharmaceuticals. We were a little disappointed in the rushed nature of the tour (perhaps due to Father's Day crowds?). The tour guide told us several times to not touch anything, though there were only two of...More

If you are going to Alexandria you must stop by for the tour. It is about half an hour, covering life at the apothecary from 1792 to 1933 (while it was in use) and after (serving as a museum). I found the description of cures...More

We enjoyed the gift shop and buying souvenirs. Did not take the actual tour, but enjoyed peeking inside.

take the tour, it was well worth it to see the storage floors and learn how this location evolved through the centuries. And how medicines changed with time. An herbalists dream come true.

Although we had a less than impressive tour guide, the Apothecary provided a glimpse of the past which would be of interest to the general public, but perhaps particularly to health care workers, who might be interested in the history of drugs in this country.

Our guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the museum and the history. He also allowed us ample opportunity for pictures, and was himself a great model- as you can see. Having watched the PBS Mercy Street series, based on the local Hospital, the tour...More

Small, cute and all authentic. I come after 4pm and I didn't had much time for a thorough visit but still I wanted to see it inside. I was by myself and no one else came at that time so they were able to accommodate...More

We came here mid-day on a Saturday. We were part of a 6 person group. The tour was terrific (and cheap!). I would highly recommend it, although it's not for toddlers or babies as it transverses several floors.
