I work across the street from this park, and I use to live across the street from it. It has a playground for the kids, an amphitheater for cool summer concerts, and there are restrooms on both sides of the park. This is an excellent park for just walking, and for joggers, and picnics and cook-outs. The park closes at... More

This is one of my favorite historical places in Alexandria. When my son, his wife and my grandson visited and they wanted a place to go for a walk, away from the traffic, and to learn a bit more about local history, this was my first choice. We walked the grounds where there are small markers with good information on... More

Fort Ward is one of the scores of forts built to defend Washington during the Civil War. There is little or nothing left of most of them, but Fort Ward is well-preserved, including most of its earthen ramparts and one restored section that includes cannons that recreates the wartime look of the Fort. After the war, the Fort grounds were... More

Walked around this spot with my son and his new dog. Really enjoyed seeing the changing fall leaves and the fort. Nice spot for a picnic but I saw a lot more people running and walking dogs - great open spaces. Seemed easy to get to as well.

We live close by and often walk through this old battlefield and fort site. The walking is in pleasant surroundings and the museum is worth a walk through for history buffs. Periodically throughout the year there are civil war reenactments. Fun to see the period costumes, tents, old rifles, etc. The area is shady which makes it ideal for walks... More

This seems to be more of a local spot than a big history place, but it has a nice museum to learn about the history, and the park is nice to venture around and enjoy.

One of the ring of artillery batteries that surrounded and protected the Nations Capitol during the Civil War, Fort Ward, as reconstructed, still stands as a silent and dignified sentry overlooking the the valley roads leading to Washington DC. At certain times every year, Civil War re-enactors will make camp at Fort Ward, and there is a small (very small)... More

Ft Ward is our favorite site to walk the dogs. The paved road is about 0.5 miles. We also like to look at the cannon sites and read the history of the site. Don't forget the cemetery.

One of the most historic locations in Northern Virginia. Original fort, with some restorations, from Civil War circle of forts around Washington. One of the few remaining forts from that period. There is a delightful museum with wide range of exhibits, photos, etc. Makes a wonderful walking tour.

Fort Ward Park is one of the really special places managed by the City of Alexandria. History If you are a history buff, Fort Ward is one of the very few forts remaining from the Civil War Defenses of Washington; during the Civil War, there was a circle of forts around Washington, DC to protect it. At the time, DC... More
