About
Hamamatsu Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it is also called "Shusse-jo (The Castle of Success)". From the observatory, you can see the city of Hamamatsu, in the castle there are many historical materials, armor, etc. related to Ieyasu and castle town "Hamamatsu." Also, Hamamatsu Castle Park, where Hamamatsu Castle is located, serves as a central park of Hamamatsu City for the locals to relax. In spring, it is a popular spot for cherry blossoms, and is crowded with visitors. To commemorate your visit to Hamamatsu Castle, we recommend that you get a "Gojyoin (a red stamp issued at the castle" (300 yen each). (January 1 only, opens from 6:30am to 4:30pm) (Closed: December 29-31) In addition, "Motoshirocho Toshogu" is a 5-minute walk from Hamamatsu Castle. It is also called "Shusse Jinja (Shrine of Success)" as the place where two warlords, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi, were led to Tenkabito (People who unified the whole of Japan), and many worshipers visit.

used to be beautiful now it is ugly
Mar 2020
it used to be very beautiful place but the city made a change to attract tourists and put massive ugly signs or allowed a starbucks to run in the property , all of which has destroyed serenity it had.

The castle is very well preserved and its in the middle of yhe city, very close to Hamamatsu Station.

Doesn't take very long to roam around it as its a small castle in comparison to other big ones.

Late reconstruction of Yeasu’s castle

Vast majority of text in Japanese. Only interesting thing is to contemplate how small has all started for the guy who created a 260 years shogunate. Reminds me of the original Habsburg castle in Switzerland; Hard to imagine that such humble beginnings led to one of the dominant monarchies in Europe.

Easy to visit, kid-friendly!
Jul 2019 • Family
We visited Hamamatsu Castle with local friends, including their 3 daughters under age 7. This was a totally manageable, mildly fun stop for our family group.

The building is beautiful from the outside, and I love the way its situation makes it visible above neighboring buildings. Parking was simple and the grounds were easy to access. My kids (ages 11 and 13) found interesting things to see on every floor, including examples of samurai armor and information about the site's history and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who rebuilt the castle in the 16th century. The highlight for me was the great view of the city from the top floor viewing area.

A time-trip
Oct 2018 • Couples
The castle can be reached by bus from the railway station which takes about 15 minutes. Although the original castle was destroyed, this building was erected in 1958 and paid for by the townspeople of Hamamatsu. You have to walk up a slope to reach the magnificent "mon" (gate). Inside the castle there is a permanent exhibition (admission is 200 Yen) about Tokugawa who had it built and lived in it for several years. On display are samurai armour, swords and maps. From the 3rd floor you have a good view, and on a clear day you can see Mount Fuji in the distance.

Is enough to see it from outside.

If you are in Hamamatsu, it’s place worth to see but to not expect to see something amazing inside. To see castle from outside is enough.

Lovely castle with amazing surrounding (see picture). Met Samurai and he is just so friendly, taking pictures with tourists and kids! We Took a while to reach to the TOP with security guidance because the step are build to be narrow and steep? Once we reach to the TOP it just beautiful! 🏰

Not so big castle but good

Nice castle and have quite a lot collection of Tokugawa Ieyasu Legacy. You must pay 200 yen to see inside the castle. It's okay to take picture in this place. If you like to collect stamp, don't forget to bring plain paper or book.
You can buy Hamamatsu Castle coin too and carve it with your own name and your visit date.

Really a nice castle located in Hamamatsu city, easily accessible from the station by bus.
Nothing much to see inside the castle, its a very small 3 story castle, maintained really well. Park beside the castle is really nice and very peaceful one can spend half a day here, it can be covered within 2 hours.
