About
Hamamatsu Zoological Garden is a municipal zoo with abundant nature facing Lake Hamana in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The adjoining "Hamamatsu Flower Park" is connected by a passage in the park, and you can visit both parks by purchasing a "joint entrance ticket". Hamamatsu zoo has the largest collection of primates among zoos in Japan including the Western Lowland Gorilla and Sumatran orangutan. Proud of the extensive exhibition contents such as lions and tigers, polar bears and black leopards. There are facilities such as a mini-safari-style large field with giraffes, zebras, and ostriches, the live interaction plaza, and konchukan (insects display facility). The last admission time is 4pm, and will be closed on December 29th, 30th and 31st.

Good place to take children. Also nice for a date.

Went with the wife the other day. Besides seeing all the cute and interesting animals, we really enjoyed the insect collection. The flowers and shrubs are really pretty. There are several playgrounds for the children. I think the petting zoo is a fantastic idea. I hope we can bring our children here in the future.

My husband and I have been to this zoo a couple times. Today, we had to stop in our tracks and leave ASAP.
The animals are extremely neglected. The zoo seems very old and the exhibits are downright medieval. It seems like the cheap entrance price of ¥410 per person is being used to simply keep the doors open and nothing more.
Most of the animals are seen pacing back and forth in dirty, tiny exhibits with no enrichment. A zoo like this would be closed immediately in America. Wake up Japan!
This zoo needs to be closed.
It is an absolute disgrace to see these magnificent animals reduced to amuse the hoards of Japanese tourists.
I am a great lover of animals and I beg and plead with you to never support this zoo in Hamamatsu.

Wouldn't recommend

The animals all looked miserable or unhealthy and the 'habitats' were pretty miserable. If you're used to nice American zoos, this one is going to look fairly awful.
