More
Located only 2km from Samaipata, Zoologico El Refugio is an animal refuge created in 2002 in order to offer rescued animals a better life. Passionate about animals and nature, Manu, the charming owner, welcomes and gives homes to animals that were brutalized, needed to be cared for or just simply needed a family. At the refuge, you will meet wild and domestic animals: monkeys, parrots, birds of prey, as well as coatis, ocelots, agoutis and dogs... Animal lovers will be won over! For the horse riders, you also have opportunity to hack on wonderful paths in the lush green valley. Families will be pleased by the children's installations and play area. If you wish to be immersed in this unique environment, you can also stay overnight in a fully equipped and charming room, the ideal place to stay close to animals from sunrise to sunset. For the budget travelers, you can put your tent up in our camping area. So what are you waiting for ?? Come and meet Chita, Madidi, Pipo, Yoyo , Spirit... And all the other animals of the refuge that await for your visit. If you wish to volunteer or support our project, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I was the only one at this animal shelter. One of the monkeys first was shy, but later did not like to let go of my leg. After that I could enter a few cages with one of the volunteers to feed the animals

We were very pleasantly surprised by this animal refuge. Having volunteered at a similar place ourselves we understand that there are a lot of challenges facing these kinds of places - predominantly funding. Having said that we believe that the staff and volunteers are doing...More

There is nothing fancy about this place, and after less than an hour, you have seen all there is to be seen. This place is run by dedicated volunteers that care very well for the animals, and so they deserve our support. Please stop by...More

My wife and daughters have now visited 3 times. I finally made it with them (and a group of friends that were visiting from the US) this last time. The place is a little "tired". It could use some general maintenance and regular upkeep. There...More

Upon visiting the zoo a couple of weeks ago I have to admit I was slightly disappointed with my experience here. The zoo was extremely dirty and appeared unkept. Most of the animals were in cages and the cages themselves were extremely poorly maintained. I...More

I vicited this animal refuge while at Samaipata and it was nice only smaller then expected and there seemed to be more people then necesary working there. They offer an volunteer in exchange of a place to set up camp and food in some cases.

I wish I could give this place a better rating. The work they do to help injured and orphaned animals is honourable. But the facilities are old and run down and quite small. I was happy to pay the 20 BOB to help support the...More

Definitely worth visiting. There are some animals in cages, but it's not a zoo - all the animals have been rescued. The place has a hippie feel to it, smiling volunteers from all over the world in dirty overals, friendly monkey on a roof and...More
