History Of Gold In Ouro Preta
Nov 2019
This was a free museum located in an old 18th Century Treasury Building and covered various aspects of gold discovery in the region and had some interesting exhibits (such as the old gold foundry and the history of money in the region) and some othes but missed the mark a little (especially for foreigners) and the English was not that well displayed. Worthy of a visit as it was one of a few that was free and there is a nice walk up the hill afterwards.

Nice building

I think that the best part about the casa dos contos is the building itself. A highlight are the old ceilings near the exit. In a basement there are interesting items, some of them related to slavery. Furthermore, there is a large collection of former Brazilian coins and paper money.

A ciew of Ouro Preto's past, a very rich past, and a cruel one, as well...

Casa dos Contos is where the crown's representative gathered taxes, melted gold, made coins housing the nobleman's family. It is well preseved and with very good information.

Nifty museum about the history of Brazil's money
Jul 2018 • Family
Think of this museum as an easy to navigate, well-appointed mint tour, with excellent specimens of Brazilian coins and paper money. The signs and narratives are entirely in Portuguese, but even if you don't speak the language, it's interesting enough and you can keep your tour reasonably brief.

Brazil and his money
Jun 2018 • Family
It’s a beautiful old and colonial
House, who served as the National Mint at XVI/ XVII century.
It is well conserved and shows all the money we had in Brazil. Because of our economy, Brazil has had a lot of Moneys. One can see a lot of coins and blanks of each period and how long they last.
In the first floor, you have a Senzala - House of the slaves - with a lot of instruments and tools used by the slaves.

Nice place, it has a free access so nobody should complain if not satisfied. But anyway the visit is very interesting so we recommend to visit it.

Key stop on Estrada Real tour

Outside of the churches, the only real example of Brazilian colonial architecture we could enter and visit. It is definitely worth an hour of your time.Varied uses over time adds to its interest. We visited the slave quarters, the mint display, period furniture rooms and the mirador or top floor room. The latter is not worth the climb since their are better views of the city to be had from Praca Tiradentes or Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Carmo.

We also visited an art exhibition on the first floor of the building.

Worth an hour of your time. As usual, no curation of exhibits in English.

Ok. Not many English descriptions
Jan 2018 • Solo
Some interesting historic exhibits and currency history. There is very little detail in English only the odd this, which made it feel a little random.

It’s free to enter.

Well worth a visit!
Dec 2017 • Couples
This museum is free to enter and takes around 1 hour to explore at a relaxed pace.
The content is a mixture of financial and local history, including some of the darker slavery aspects. It is an interesting visit and adds to any explore of Ouro Preto
The view from the balconies is worth checking out too.
There are a limited number of English descriptions - limited to the room plaques only.
It is not essential to understand everything as a lot of it is visual, but having someone who can translate for you is a benefit!
Definitely recommended.
